A couple of weeks ago we noticed that Indego bike share station disappeared from 40th and Woodland. No worries, the station is not gone, it’s been moved to another nearby location. It’s now on Baltimore Avenue near 40th, adjacent to the newly opened Trolley Car Station restaurant. This new bike share station is a part of the Trolley Portal Gardens project, which is officially opening on Sept. 27th at 5 p.m. And now you can hop on a bike and burn some of those calories after dining at the restaurant.

The 40th Street Trolley Portal makeover project, Trolley Portal Gardens, is nearly complete. The site is expected to be open and operational by next month. Neighbors are invited to celebrate the official grand opening of the Gardens, which will include a ribbon cutting, an open house, and light refreshments, on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 5-7 p.m.

In the past few months, new elements have been added to the site, including boulders, custom seats, trees, concrete pavers, and tree plaques, in addition to the raised mounds. New lighting poles and lights have also been installed. Trash and recycling containers have also been recently added, and before the space officially opens to the public it will be completed with tables and chairs. The much anticipated construction of Trolley Portal Gardens, the project that will include a remodeled 40th Street Trolley portal, a public space and a restaurant, has begun. Philadelphia general contractor Domus will begin excavating the building foundation as early as the end of this week, according to Chris Richman, Communication Manager for University City District.

The work will spread to a larger area, called “the apron,” after the Trolley Tunnel Blitz concludes in mid-July.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Trolley Portal Gardens was held in December 2016, but it took some time to obtain necessary building permits. The last remaining permits were finalized earlier this month, according to the project website.  Continue Reading
