Before the winter storm hit on Friday, a large sinkhole had opened up on 40th Street between Walnut and Chestnut, closing the block down to traffic (and plows). The weekend storm delayed the sinkhole repairs. Here are a few photos taken today on the block:

And here’s the sinkhole:

According to a West Philly Local reader, who posted a comment on the site, there is a creek that runs under the street and “there used to be a door under the Free Library on the corner (might still be) that you could open and see the creek.” Reportedly, there is a brick arch covering it, but the bricks are more than 100 years old.

A large sinkhole has opened up on 40th Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets, according to an announcement by Penn Public Safety, and this portion of the street is closed to all vehicular traffic, including SEPTA Operations. Philadelphia Water Department has been notified, but due to the impending snowstorm, this closure will potentially last for several days.
Philadelphia and Penn Police will be on location throughout the weekend to assist with the closures and detours.

The large sinkhole that opened up on the 4600 block of Spruce Street about three weeks ago has finally been filled in, and this portion of the street has reopened for traffic. Water Department crews though are still working on the street surface around the spot where the sinkhole used to be. Parking is still not allowed in the area, because the ground is unstable.

UPDATE (1/24/2015): A week later…
(1/19/2015): As of 8:25 p.m. on Monday, the sinkhole is still there. The cars that had been caught in it have been pulled out. We didn’t see any Streets Department crews working there when we stopped by on Monday night. Although the hole, which is on the eastbound lane, hasn’t been fixed, the block reopened to traffic (you have to get in the westbound lane to go around it). What makes it even more dangerous is that the hole is very close to the 46th and Spruce intersection. Please be careful when driving or biking on that block.
A large sinkhole opened up on the 4600 block of Spruce Street on Sunday under two cars parked on the block. A reader, Phil Gentry, tweeted this photo at around 4 p.m.

The street surface there had problems over the weekend, and the Streets Department crews continued working on the block. A water main break closed the block to traffic on Saturday, and there was no water supply to nearby homes for several hours.
A police tow truck began pulling two cars off the edge of the hole at about 8:30 p.m.. The block is closed to all traffic and the Route 42 bus is on detour until 12 p.m. on Monday.

UPDATE (2/15/2014): Many residents around 48th and Warrington are without water this morning, as the broken main has been shut off and water department crews are at the site trying to repair it. The repairs may take several hours and the water service is expected to be restored by this evening, according to PWD.
(2/14/2014, 10:43 p.m.): West Philly Local readers reported a water main break at 48th and Warrington, shortly after 10 p.m. A sinkhole has also formed in the middle of the street (see photos below). The police currently have the road blocked at 48th Street. The water to the neighboring blocks will likely be shut off shortly, according to the officers on site. Photos by Tom Gaeta.

Michelle put white buckets on either side of the sinkhole last night.
A neighbor, Michelle R., would like to warn residents about a very hazardous sinkhole in the middle of 50th Street between Beaumont and Warrington Avenues:
“There is a huge “ditch” (that’s how the city defines a rectangular hole in the ground that develops after a utility company digs up the street and fails to fill it back in properly) in the middle of 50th Street in between Beaumont and Warrington Avenues. It is in the path of oncoming traffic in both directions, 14 inches deep on one side, and not at all visible in the dark. We put white 5 gallon buckets on either side, but who knows if they’ll last… Please watch out, this one is a car killer and potential accident causer.”
Michelle says that she also emailed the Streets Department and submitted an online maintenance request.
