The oldest annual track and field event in the nation, The Penn Relays, kicks off this week at Franklin Field (233 S. 33rd Street), and that means there will be a lot of additional traffic on the east end of Penn’s campus.

The 122nd edition of The Penn Relays starts Thursday and runs through Saturday. If you have the scratch, the events are worth attending (information on tickets is here). Some 15,000 athletes participate, some of whom you will likely see at this summer’s Olympic Games in Brazil.

Otherwise, it’s a part of town to avoid for a couple of days if you’re trying to get somewhere else. Expect heavy delays around the stadium all day Thursday through Saturday. On Saturday, 33rd Street from South Street to Walnut Street will be closed from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If you make the trip to Franklin Field, here’s some info on what you can take in with you.

One person injured after underground electrical explosion at 34th and Walnut

Posted on 24 March 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

One person was injured as the result of an underground electrical explosion at 34th and Walnut this morning at around 10:15 a.m. The explosion of underground PECO electric lines propelled two manhole covers into the air, right in front of The Gap and Penn’s Franklin Building, and injured a man, according to an announcement by Penn Public Safety Division. The injured person is currently receiving medical treatment.

The affected PECO lines have been under repair over the past few weeks due to power outages in the area.

The sidewalk was closed and Walnut Street was reduced to one lane following the incident. Police were on the scene to assist with traffic.

The incident prompted Penn Public Safety to issue the following statement: “Rest assured that this incident is not related to the current international unrest.”

The all clear was announced and normal activity with some police presence resumed in the area at about 10:50 a.m.

“Glen’s Village”: Must-see doc on West Philly kid, his mom and redemption

OK, first thing … You need to carve 30 minutes out of your day and watch the mini-documentary Glen’s Village, a film about a kid who grew up around 52nd and Haverford, was dealing crack by the 9th grade and is now, thanks to the strength of his mother and himself, a student at Penn. (It’s embedded below).

The film takes you through Glen’s childhood growing up with a dad who was, as one person in the film puts it, basically a “drug kingpin.” He was later deported to Jamaica, leaving Glen’s mother to raise him alone. It wasn’t going well as he entered his teens and by ninth grade Glen was regularly skipping school and selling drugs.

But at University City High School he turns it around. As one of the school’s star students, Glen testified before the School Reform Commission as it considered closing the school. UC High’s closure is an important part of the film, as is his work at Sayre High School, where he teaches part time to fulfill his scholarship obligations.  Continue Reading

Police investigating suspicious death of 21-year-old female Penn student at 40th and Sansom

Posted on 29 September 2014 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old female Penn student whose body was found in a three-story student boarding house near 40th and Sansom.

Police say roommates discovered the woman on Sunday night, at around 11:30 p.m., in her bedroom and attempted CPR. When police arrived they observed a blood spatter on the wall next to the woman, according to a police report.

An empty pill bottle was found on a nearby table for 60 pills prescribed to the woman about two weeks ago for treatment of depression, according to the report. There were also two notes on her desk, one addressed to her family and one to her mental health doctor at Penn. The letters appeared to be suicide notes, according to police. The woman’s roommates told police that they heard her screaming and heard banging sounds coming from her room earlier Sunday.

Police said they are treating the death as suspicious and the investigation is continuing.

Boundary of Penn’s home buying program moves further west

Posted on 16 September 2014 by Mike Lyons

The University of Pennsylvania has expanded its home-buying program out to 56th Street, according to the university’s Department of Home Ownership Services. The program is designed to entice full-time staff and faculty to live in West Philly.

The new western boundary will extend from 52nd Street to the east side of 56th from Market Street south to Paschall Avenue (see map below). The eastern boundary is unchanged, running along the Schuylkill River. The northern boundary runs along Haverford Avenue to 44th Street where it switches to Market Street. These are the first changes to the program, which provides a $7,500 forgivable loan toward the purchase or improvement of a home, since 2004.

The loan benefit also applies to employees of the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
