You may have recently noticed the artwork of Penn Alexander student Lamees Abou-Hatab on the northwest corner of 42nd and Spruce.

Literally on the corner.

Lamees’s art work is a creative reminder that what you dump in the street drains will find its way into rivers and streams. Her work was chosen as part of a student art contest hosted by the Philadelphia Water Department and the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and was turned into street art over the summer. The School District of Philadelphia has announced the hiring of a new principal to replace the school’s founding principal, Sheila Sydnor, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Michael T. Farrell, a West Philly native and the founding principal of Thomas Elementary School in South Philadelphia (run by Mastery Charter Schools) will take over at Penn Alexander in the fall. Farrell has been at Thomas since 2013 and before that he was an assistant principal, special education coordinator and teacher at various Philadelphia schools, including Science Leadership Academy.

A committee of Penn Alexander teachers, the School Advisory Council and University of Pennsylvania assisted the district in the nationwide search, which took more than three months.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Sydnor began her career as a teacher in 1975 and was principal of M.H. Stanton Elementary School in North Philadelphia before coming to Penn Alexander when the school opened in 2001.

“The Penn Alexander School is one of the brightest spots in The School District of Philadelphia as a result of Sheila Sydnor’s stellar leadership,” Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent said in a statement.

Sydnor will assist Farrell in the transition, according to the statement.

A West Philadelphia 7th grader, Saif Siddiquee, participated in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee, being held this week in Washington, DC. 13-year-old Saif is a Penn Alexander School student. On Wednesday, Saif competed in the Preliminary Rounds 2 and 3 (onstage oral spelling) and spelled correctly both words (“crudités” and “recrudescence”) presented to him by the Bee’s official pronouncer, Dr. Jacques Bailly.

Only 45 kids out of the 285 who entered in this year’s competition made it to the Finals, and, unfortunately, Saif wasn’t one of them. Nevertheless, we congratulate Saif on his great performance and for representing his school and Philadelphia in this prestigious contest.

The Penn Alexander School’s first and only principal, Sheila Sydnor, will retire at the end of this school year, and The School District of Philadelphia has announced a search for a new principal to lead the school starting from the 2016-2017 school year.

Sydnor has served as Penn Alexander School Principal since it opened in 2001. A veteran district teacher and administrator, she was selected from a pool of 60 candidates. Under her leadership the University of Pennsylvania-assisted neighborhood school has earned a reputation for educational excellence. The school was named as the best K-8 school in the district in the 2014-2015 School Progress Report.

On Wednesday, March 9, community members are invited to join in the conversation regarding the search for a new principal. A meeting with the search committee, which is chaired by Sean Conley, assistant superintendent for Neighborhood Network Two of the School District of Philadelphia, and Dr. Pam Grossman, dean of the Penn Graduate School of Education, will take place from 7 – 8 p.m. in Penn Alexander’s cafeteria.

The committee is holding a series of outreach meetings with key stakeholders. These meetings are an opportunity for community members to learn about the search process and voice their ideas.

The School District of Philadelphia released on Thursday the 2014-2015 School Progress Report (SPR), which measured performance of both District and charter schools during the school year. According to the report, Penn Alexander School (PAS) is the best K-8 school in the district and is the only school to attain the highest performance ratings across all the domains – Achievement, Climate and Growth. In 2013-2014, PAS was ranked 6th among the district’s K-8 schools.

Samuel Powel Elementary, a small K-4 school in Powelton Village, is ranked 5th best elementary school in the district and is one of the three Peer Leaders (the school achieved the highest SPR scores among others with similar students). The school enrolled about 260 students in the 2014-2015 school year.

Paul Robeson High School for Human Services was honored for the highest four-year graduation rates among non-special admission schools.

Kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 19. A couple of area schools will soon start the lottery application process.

Penn Alexander School.

Penn Alexander School (43rd and Locust) will start accepting applications for Kindergarten lottery also on January 19. Applications will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 29. Applications received after Feb. 29 will be placed on a wait list. Only children residing within the PAS Catchment are eligible for the lottery (two proofs of residency within the catchment are are required).

The lottery will be conducted on the week of March 7, and student households will receive lottery letters the following week. For more information about kindergarten registration at PAS, go to the school website.

The School District of Philadelphia introduced somewhat controversial lottery process at PAS in 2013 after the school had received an overwhelming number of applications in the previous few years. The first public school in the district to introduce admissions lottery, the PAS lottery was called a “pilot” for other schools.

One of the new charter schools in the area, Independence Charter School West has been accepting lottery applications since November 2015. The school is enrolling students in grades K-3 for its inaugural 2016-2017 school year in Southwest Philadelphia (the school will open at 56th and Chester in September 2016). Children residing in Southwest and West Philadelphia and in Overbrook are welcome to apply (priority will be given to students from the Bartram, Overbrook, and Sayre high school catchments).
