Kids’ items super swap tomorrow

Posted on 10 October 2011 by WPL

West Philly parents, here’s a great chance for you to get rid of unwanted kids’ clothes and toys, to pick up something you need and to help a good cause. Penn Women’s Center and the Greenfield Intercultural Center are organizing a super swap tomorrow, Oct. 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greenfield Intercultural Center’s location at 3708 Chestnut Street.

Bring your baby, toddler, children’s maternity clothing, toys, books and gear (clean, gently used items, please). Boys, gender neutral and older kids’ clothing will be especially appreciated. Make a minimum $5.00 donation at the entrance to benefit the New Parents @ Penn Group and take what you want. It’s not required to bring items to swap in order to participate. All remaining items will be donated to a local women’s charity.

All items should be dropped off no later than 10 a.m. If you want to help set up, clean-up or if you have questions please contact: Sarvelia Peralta-Duran at: sarvelia.peralta [at] gmail.com

Walnut West Chess Club looking for volunteer coaches

Posted on 19 September 2011 by WPL

Members and coaches of the Walnut Street West Library Chess Club at a competition in the city last year.

The Walnut West Library Chess Club is in need of volunteer coaches to assist in conducting a weekly class and acting as mentors to the young student players. You do not need to be a Master player, but knowledge of the game would be very helpful.

The club is going into its fourth year and has experienced rapid growth and recognition at the city-wide tournaments held every month of the school year. It is a very rewarding experience for the right person. The club meets on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the library, 201 S. 40th Street.

Some afterschool and weekend programs for kids

Posted on 06 September 2011 by WPL

The school year has begun and many parents are looking for afterschool and weekend activities for their children. We have come across a couple of flyers – one is an afterschool art program (we gave them a ring and learned that it’s a new program run by artist Rachel Louis) and the other is a weekend music program by Intercultural Family Services, Inc. We’ll be adding more such information as it comes. If you know of more afterschool programs for kids in the area email us at: editor [at] westphillylocal.com or leave a comment.
