If you are still feeling generous during this holiday season, there are a few local community organizations that could use some help. Plus, you might get the added benefit of a last-minute, 2015 tax write-off.

Here are some chances to help out:

• The West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools has made great strides in remaking the Henry Lea School playground into a terrific community asset. But they’re not done. In 2016, the organization wants to repaint the basketball court, install seating and new flags. They need some more funding help to get it done. Go here to learn more and donate.

• Curio Theatre Company also relies on contributions to survive (along, of course, with income from their performances). In addition to its line-up of fabulous performances, Curio runs a a theatre school for neighborhood kids that has never turned a child away because of financial need. They want to keep that going in 2016. Click here to donate.

• The Soapbox Community Print Shop and Zine Library is in the middle of a fundraising effort to get its new 4,500-square-foot book arts and printmaking studio up and running. They are about halfway there and only have a couple of days left to hit their goal of $15,000. They have all kinds of cool stuff available for donors, including memberships, zine packs and even hand-bound sketchbooks. Check out their campaign here.

As West Philly Local recently reported, the Henry C. Lea Elementary School playground at 47th and Spruce was undergoing reconstruction, with a new set being transferred from the shuttered Alexander Wilson school. The installation work finished up yesterday and the playground will reopen on Monday, Sept. 15, according to a tweet by the West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools.

As budget cuts slash deeper and deeper into the city’s public schools, teachers and principals need to get more creative in looking for resources to help students. Parents and community residents are a great place to start.

That’s why parents and community members are invited to the Henry C. Lea School (47th and Locust) on Monday for a community forum hosted by principal Sonya Harrison. The roundtable discussion will focus on the question, “How can all adults work together to improve student success at the Lea School?”

Two sessions of the forum will be held Monday. The first is 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and breakfast will be provided. The later session runs from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and dinner and homework help are provided.

Now here’s an enormous chance to help a neighborhood public school transform their playground from a swath of asphalt to a green area. The Henry C. Lea Elementary School is one of 10 finalists for a $75,000 Green School Makeover grant from Global Green USA. The school has been selected out of hundreds of entries from across the country!

The 2nd Green School Makeover Competition will award a $75,000 cash prize and a $5,000 Office Depot gift card to one K-12 school in the U.S. for an innovative green school project. The winner will also receive technical assistance from Global Green USA’s team of green schools/green building experts.

Organizers from the Henry C. Lea School (4700 Locust St.) hope to transform the school’s play area into a green and healthy environment. Currently, the school’s primary play space is a barren asphalt lot devoid of benches, greenery and shade. In addition to a new school garden that would provide an outdoor area for science classes to do planting, the school plans a new recycling program and the installation of rooftop solar panels. The project proposes transforming the school playground into a green environment.

A beautiful new planting bed was recently installed in the Lea Elementary School playground along Spruce Street near 47th. Sixty volunteers came out over three days to dig, till, move soil, and plant to create the 1,400-square-foot bed with trees, shrubs, and bulbs.

This project was the first phase of the recently completed Lea Schoolyard Master Plan, a vision for a vibrant, active, fun, ecological, educational, green schoolyard and community space at 47th and Spruce. The Master Plan is the product of the collaboration between Greening Lea – a group of parents, students, teachers, neighbors, and stakeholders – and the Community Design Collaborative.

Collaborative volunteers will soon announce a date when they will be presenting their master plan to the entire community. Stay tuned for more information.

The West Philly Coalition for Neighborhood Schools has announced that due to increased enrollment and demand, Lea Elementary (47th and Locust) will be adding Kindergarten and 1st grade classes for the 2012-2013 school year.

Registration and enrollment will begin on Wednesday, September 19 at 8:30 a.m. and those students who will arrive early enough in the day to register will be able to begin attending classes the same day.
