Three teens arrested after gunpoint robbery near 47th and Springfield

Thanks to a stolen cell phone’s tracking app, police were able to track down and detain three young males suspected in a gunpoint robbery near 47th and Springfield on Thursday evening.

Police say that a 40-year-old man was walking in the area at about 6:40 p.m. when he was approached by three young males who put what he believed to be a handgun to the back of his head, told him to not look back and put his hands on top of his head. Then the males took the man’s iPhone, Mac Book Pro laptop, house keys, and a backpack, and told him to run and not look back, according to a police report. The victim ran home and was actively tracking his phone to the area of 51st Street between Pentridge and Florence before it was manually powered off, according to police.  Continue Reading

Gunpoint robbery at 45th and Spruce; other robbery reports (updated)

The holidays turned out to be not so happy for some West Philly residents and guests. We received two reports of robberies, including an armed robbery, in the area over the past six days. We’ll start with the more recent one.

A 25-year-old man was robbed and pistol-whipped on Sunday, Dec. 27 on the 4500 block of Spruce Street. The victim told police that he was walking home shortly after 9 p.m. when he was approached from behind by two males, one of whom placed him in a choke hold and forced him to the ground, while the other male hit him in the head with a handgun.

The male with a handgun then took an iPhone from the victim’s pocket and both males ran toward 46th Street, got on bicycles and fled westbound, according to police. The victim’s phone was tracked to the area of May Street and Haverford Avenue before it was powered off. The firearm’s magazine, which fell during the robbery, was turned over to police by the victim. It was determined that the magazine belongs to a BB gun. The suspects are described as black males, 25-30 years old, medium build, about 5’9″-6’0″ tall. One suspect was wearing a grey hoody and light colored pants. Man robbed at gunpoint on 4400 block of Osage

Police released information on a gunpoint robbery that took place on Sunday night on the 4400 block of Osage Ave. A 29-year-old man was talking on his cell phone outside of his residence at approximately 7:45 p.m. when an unknown male approached him from behind and pointed a black pistol at his face, according to a police report. He then told the victim to turn around, lie down and empty his pockets. The robber fled with the victim’s cash (approximately $15), according to police.

The suspect is described as a black male, around 30 years old, 5’9″ to 6″, thin to medium build. He was dressed in a dark hoodie (with the hood up) and dark pants.  Continue Reading

12- and 11-year-old rob 13-year-old at gunpoint for iPhone at 42nd and Locust

A Penn Alexander eighth grader was robbed at gunpoint on Thursday evening near 42nd and Locust by two boys, police said.

The eighth grader and a witness told police that at about 7 p.m. he got into an argument with two other boys, ages 11 and 12, when one produced a handgun and asked the victim to hand over his iPhone 6. The two boys fled and were later apprehended near 46th and Spruce. No gun was found, but police retrieved the phone.

We are not releasing the names of the any of the boys involved because of their ages.

Series of gunpoint robberies on S. 50th street on Wednesday

A series of gunpoint robberies committed by what looks like the same two suspects took place on Wednesday night on South 50th street, according to police.

The first robbery was reported near 50th and Walton. A 24-year-old man told police that he was walking in the area around 9:50 p.m. and talking on his cell phone when he was approached by two unknown males who had white T-shirts covering their faces. One of the males pointed a black handgun at the man and said: “Where’s the money? Where’s the phone?”, according to a police report. The man handed the robbers his Samsung flip phone and his wallet containing his credit and debit cards and identification. One of the robbers also grabbed the man’s backpack, after which both suspects fled northbound on 50th street. The man was not injured. Man robbed at gunpoint by two young males wearing masks at 44th and Sansom

Police are investigating a gunpoint robbery that took place on Monday night, shortly after 10 p.m. A 25-year-old man was walking on 44th street near Sansom when an unknown young male wearing a mask ran up to him from behind, pulled out a black handgun and demanded the man’s cell phone and wallet, according to police. Then the victim noticed another young male nearby, also wearing a mask. The gunman took the victim’s iPhone and the other robber took his wallet, according to a police report. Then both robbers fled in opposite directions. No injuries were reported. Suspects are described as black males, 18-21 years old, 5’9″ – 5’10”, both wearing masks covering their faces.
