Garden Court residents are invited this Thursday, March 15 to the neighborhood association’s (GCCA) general meeting where they can learn more about zoning and how it impacts their neighborhood.

The meeting will include a special presentation by Martine DeCamp, senior planner for the City of Philadelphia assigned to University City and Southwest Philadelphia, who will share an overview of the city’s zoning process. You can also learn about how you can get involved and ask your most pressing zoning questions. Refreshments will be provided.

The meeting will be held at Mosaic Community Church (123 S. 51st St.) from 7 p.m. until approximately 8:30 p.m.

It’s worth noting that a recent proposal by the Post Brothers to build a 243-unit addition to Garden Court Plaza at 4701 Pine St. (see rendering) was rejected by the city for not conforming to the current zoning code (CMX-2) because of its height, density and open space and required a special variance. If you are one of those who were patiently waiting for this coffee shop to open in Garden Court Plaza on the 4700 block of Pine Street, the wait is finally over. Kensington-based coffee shop, ReAnimator Coffee, opened its West Philly location this past weekend. The shop is run by co-founders Mark Capriotti and Mark Corpus, who had been supplying Mariposa Food Co-op with bulk coffee beans for a while and also operate cafes in Fishtown and the Graduate Hospital neighborhood. A crowd of about 70 people gathered to hear about a proposed 243-unit addition to the Garden Court Plaza complex on the 4700 block of Pine Street voted overwhelmingly against the plan.

Post Bros., the current owners of Garden Court Plaza, want to erect an adjacent building that would bring the total number of residential units of the complex at the corner of 47th and Pine to 389. The plan requires the city to issue variances for both building height and density. Current zoning for the site allows for a building with a maximum height of 38 feet. The proposal would double the density maximum for the site, currently set at 170 units.  Continue Reading

Philadelphia-based developers the Post Brothers, the new owners of the Garden Court Plaza located at 47th and Pine, are proposing development of a new six-story 243-unit apartment complex, Garden Court Flats, which would be built on top of the existing one-story parking garage adjacent to the 14-story Garden Court Plaza building. The development plan was submitted to the city’s Department of Licences and Inspections, but was rejected for not conforming to the zoning code.   Continue Reading

Jamie Gauthier, a Garden Court resident, has been named the executive director of the Fairmount Park Conservancy. The organization made the decision on September 13 and announced it on October 9. She had been acting director for several months.

She first joined the Conservancy, a nonprofit that promotes and improves Philadelphia’s parks in conjunction with the city, in January 2017. Prior to that, she had directed Philadelphia’s Sustainable Business Network (SBN), which she described as a kind of chamber of commerce for socially conscious businesses. While at SBN, she became drawn to “Rebuild,” City Hall’s $500 million program to revitalize neighborhoods. That eventually compelled her to leave SBN and join the Conservancy.

“Rebuild is the biggest neighborhood-centered initiative I can recall, so I had to be involved in it,” she said. “So that’s why I ended up leaving SBN, so that I could help the Conservancy connect to Rebuild in some way.”  Continue Reading

On Saturday, Sept. 30, community members are invited to visit the beautiful homes of the Garden Court neighborhood and dine on gourmet meals prepared by talented neighborhood chefs, while supporting the Cheryl Roebuck Scholarship Fund and community projects at the annual Garden Court Community Association (GCCA) Progressive Dinner.

The event will begin at 5:30 with registration followed by appetizers. Then, at 7 p.m., guests are invited to visit several pre-selected homes for dinner. Guests can choose from the following cuisines: classic Mexican, Belgian, Irish, Italian, Ethiopian, and more! It’s a really tasty way to get to know your neighbors.
