Award-winning filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe will screen and discuss the autobiographical account of his change from an honors student to a 16-year-old convicted bank robber tonight at International House Philadelphia (3701 Chestnut St.).

Evolution of a Criminal, which was featured on PBS earlier this year, recounts the story of a bank robbery by a group of Texas high school students, including Monroe himself. The film takes the audience back to his neighborhood and includes interviews that present the crime and its consequences from multiple aspects and raises profound questions about crime, the criminal justice system and redemption. Spike Lee is the film’s executive producer. A Q&A with Monroe will follow the film.

Tonight’s program is part of Scribe Video Center’s Producers’ Forum series. It also includes a screening of Stolen Dreams II:Breaking the Cycle of Youth Trauma, Violence & Imprisonment, a short film examining the transfer of juveniles into the adult system as a response to youth crime. The film grew out of the Youth Art and Self Empowerment Project (YASP).

The program starts at 7 p.m. and tickets ($10/$7 for students and seniors) are available online or at the IHP Box Office.

• Stop by Scribe Video Center to check out Landscape Renewal, an exhibition featuring the works of seven artists working in diverse media: Richard Watson, Ted McGhee, Jonathan Pinkett, Alvin K.Nurse, Amir Lyles, Asaake Denise Jones, and Jerry Puryear. Valentine’s Day is almost here, and many of our readers will be looking for something to do with their special someones. Friday is finally here and despite chilly temperatures hitting our area a lot of cool and energizing stuff will be happening tonight on Lancaster Avenue, between 35th and 43rd Streets, as part of the monthly 2nd Fridays on Lancaster Avenue. Tonight’s program will include an art show opening, film screenings, live music and open mic, an orchestral disco party, coffee tasting, shopping, and more! 5 Broken Cameras flyer in Clark Park.

The 2014 Clark Park Summer Film Series, which brings documentary and other independent film screenings into the park’s bowl near 45th and Regent, concludes Friday, Aug. 29. 5 Broken Cameras, the winner of the World Documentary Directing Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and Academy Award nominee for the best documentary feature, will be screened, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The film, shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, portrays non-violent resistance in the West Bank (see trailer below).

This is an outdoor screening, free and open to the public. Bring your chairs, blankets and popcorn!

A few other great events are scheduled in the area this weekend. Clark Park will host Pagan Pride Day on Saturday and there will be a couple of live music concerts. More info is coming soon.

The Philadelphia Student Union and the Media Mobilizing Project are hosting a screening on Thursday of short films students created in response to the school budget crisis.

Student Union members have been working with three filmmakers since January. The collaboration resulted in three short films about school closures, the “struggle for a high quality education in Philadelphia” and the school-to-prison pipeline. This is the first time these films will be screened and the public is invited. High school age youth and PSU sustainers will be admitted free of charge. Others are asked for a donation ranging from $5 to $20. There will also be pizza on hand.

The screening runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Media Mobilizing Project headquarters at 4233 Chestnut St. Get tickets here.
