Are you a runner or considering becoming one?  Here are some like-minded people who can help you get started or keep you going. Clark Park Track Club welcomes people of all ages and skill levels to join them for runs around the perimeter of Clark Park (o.5 mile loop).

The club was founded in the winter of 2010 by neighbor Janine Schwab to provide a safer environment when running in the dark during winter months. But soon Janine saw other opportunities for the club to flourish, including a chance for parents to run in the park while their kids play at the playground.

Now the club meets every Monday at 7:30 p.m. (6 p.m. in the winter) at the #13 trolley shelter (43rd & Chester) and as many as 10 people have shown up for the 1-4 mile runs. The club is looking to grow so that they can accommodate different paces for partnering. Right now paces range from sub-elite to turtle. Rollers and walkers are welcome too.

Another West Philly running club, West Philly Runners, is also open to runners of any experience level. They meet each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. outside of Abyssiania at 45th and Locust. Runners usually do a 2-, 4- or 6-mile pre-planned route around the neighborhood.

The club is not affiliated with any of the universities but students are welcome. Those who take part are also invited to convene at Fiume (above Abyssinia) for a post-run beer or two.

The tiny circus came to Clark Park this morning. Performers from the movement arts group Tangle strung a trapeze, hoop and long pieces of fabric called “silks” from a large tree between the bowl and playground and entertained dozens of people young and old.

The West Philly Tool Library supplied the ladder, a key piece of equipment when you do acrobatics while hanging from a tree.

You may have seen the tiny circus in this spot before. This time the performers were promoting their upcoming show “Ampersand” at Philly Fringe on Sept. 8-9 at Philadelphia Soundstages at 1600 N. 5th St. Ampersand combines “trapeze aerial rope and partner acrobatics with power narratives of belonging.”

Their Fringe shows are:

• Sept. 8 – 7:30 p.m.
• Sept. 9 – 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Street Movies!, a series of free outdoor short movie screenings and live performances organized by Scribe Video Center (4212 Chestnut St.), are happening this month in communities all around Philadelphia. The films, including animation, documentary, and experimental, focus on environmental justice, healthy foods, new immigrants and urban green spaces.

This Saturday, August 6, Street Movies! will be in West Philly. Four films will be screened in Clark Park’s Bowl (45th & Kingsessing) starting at 7:30 p.m. The film presentation is hosted by the Jubilee School and the Green Guerillas, who will power the screening with their biodiesel waste and vegetable oil-powered bus the “Grease Guzzler.”

Philly-based hip hop artist Alwatan Kwele, who is originally from Tanzania, will open the evening.

There will be another screening in West Philly hosted by Mill Creek Community Partnership on August 27. Stay tuned for more information about that event.

Green Grease Guzzlers

A story about alternative and sustainable transportation, this excerpt showcases Green Guerrillas ona move, making their collective’s transportation more “eco-friendly” with the conversion of a 1990 Ford Econoline diesel bus into a lean and green biodiesel/waste veggie oil machine. Save the Future

A young girl re-imagines her life as a PSA, blurring the lines between her family troubles and environmental catastrophe. Save the Future is a companion short to her feature “Future Weather” about global warming. The whole production was environmentally conscious. (2009, 3 min)
 

Curio Theatre Company has announced that its 2011-2012 season will include a free performance of “Lord of the Flies” in Clark Park, Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five” and Dario Fo’s “Accidental Death of an Anarchist.”

The company has announced that discounted ticket packages are available for the upcoming season that amounts to a free ticket to one of four productions.

Curio’s season kicks off on September 2 with a special staging of Nigel Williams’ adaptation of “Lord of the Flies” in Clark Park as part of the Philly Fringe Live Arts Festival. The run also includes performances on Sept. 3, 7, 8 and 9 that are free and open to the public.

Its regular schedule includes:

• “Eurydice” – Oct. 12 through Nov. 12

• “Accidental Death of an Anarchist” – Dec. 7 through Jan. 7

• “Slaughterhouse-Five” – Feb 2 through March 3

• “The Tempest” – April 19 through May 19.

Yoga teacher Emily Wishnick is organizing a donation Vinyasa Yoga class on Saturday, July 30, from 10-11:30 a.m. in Clark Park (near the playground). Almost everything is ready for the 6th annual installment of Shakespeare in Clark Park. Yesterday the technical crew set up the equipment and actors began rehearsing in the park.

This year Shakespeare in Clark Park company presents “Much Ado About Nothing,” which is set in a post-war town. Alex Torres will direct the performance. You can learn more about the show here.

The performances will take place July 20 through July 24 (Wed-Sun) at 7 p.m. If it rains on the day of a performance it will be relocated to Curio Theatre (48th Street and Baltimore Avenue). For more information go here.
