This one didn’t end so well for the robber.

A 25-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint early Thursday morning on the way to her apartment near Florence Ave and St. Bernard St., but thanks to the brave actions of another young woman, who was walking her dog nearby and who chased down the robber, the victim’s belongings were retrieved.

The incident happened around 2 a.m., according to police. The 25-year-old parked her car on the 800 block of St. Bernard and was walking to her apartment and talking on her cell phone when she heard someone behind her say something. She turned and saw a man in his 30’s standing behind her holding a black gun in his hand. The woman dropped her handbag and began screaming loudly. The man picked up her bag and ran south on St. Bernard. The bag contained several textbooks, police said.

A 24-year-old woman was walking her dog in the area of Florence and St. Bernard when she heard loud screams, police said. She ran towards the screaming and saw a male running south with a bag. The woman gave chase, with her dog leading the way, onto Warrington Ave and found the robber attempting to scale a high fence in a rear yard with the gun still in his hand. The man turned and saw the woman and waved the gun in her direction. He then ran past her west on Warrington and south on 50th Street. The woman recovered the stolen bag and returned it to the owner. No injuries were reported.

Some West Philly Local readers who live in that area heard loud screams by a woman and wrote us to report them and police presence shortly afterwords.

A caveat here: While this one ended well for the victim and the chaser, police obviously do not recommend confrontations with armed robbers.

Philadelphia Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the man who robbed the Wine and Spirits store near 49th and Baltimore last week. The robbery happened on Thursday, Sept. 19, around 8:30 p.m. when the suspect, an unknown male, entered the store at 4908 Baltimore Avenue, pointed a gun at an employee and demanded money. After the employee opened the cash register, the suspect went behind the counter and took an unspecified amount of money from the drawer, according to Philly Police Blog. Later he fled on foot in an unknown direction.

A taxi driver was shot in the hand by a passenger Thursday night on the 200 block of S. Farragut Street, according to police. The incident happened shortly before 10 p.m. when the passenger pulled out a gun and announced a robbery after the cab stopped. The passenger was picked up at 48th and Baltimore and asked to be taken to 47th and Locust Streets, but when the taxi arrived at 47th and Locust he told the driver to turn down 200 S. Farragut St. and to let him out there. When the driver pulled over the passenger pulled out a black handgun, reached through the partition and pointed the handgun at the driver’s head, demanding money, police said. The driver, who worked for Freedom Taxi, grabbed the gun and a struggle ensued, during which the driver was shot and wounded in his right thumb and left index finger with a single shot.

After shooting the driver the passenger took his money, cell phone and car keys and fled south on Farragut Street. He ran into an alleyway and disappeared. The victim’s cell phone was later found on Farragut Street.

The cab driver was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment and is expected to be okay.

Police are asking for public’s assistance in locating the suspect. He’s described as a black male, dark complexion, 28-32 years old, 5’9-6’00” tall, thin build, thick beard with mustache. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and carrying a black backpack.

Police are looking for four men who robbed Forman Mills, a clothing department store at 48th and Market, this afternoon. The robbery happened shortly after 4 p.m. Four armed men in masks came in the store and robbed it of about $500, according to police. No one was hurt. The robbers fled on foot through the parking lot. We’ll post more information when it’s available.

Penn Police keep an eye on the Honda Accord Friday morning believed to have been used in a string of robberies Thursday night.

Two suspects were arrested last night after a string of armed robberies that occurred within about two hours beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m. at 45th and Sansom.

Police say that the first robbery happened on the 4500 block of Sansom Street when two men, one armed with a black handgun and knife and the other with a silver handgun, approached two people and demanded their phones and wallets. The two men got away with an iPhone, credit cards and about $50 in cash.

The second robbery happened at 42nd and Locust about 30 minutes later, according to police. A man was approached by two males, one showing a black handgun, and ordered to give up his phone. The victim observed the suspects flee in a late model black Honda Accord. The Daily Pennsylvanian has more details on this robbery.

At about 10 p.m. five Drexel University students were robbed near 32nd and Powelton by two men armed with guns. The suspects fled with five iPhones and some cash. The students also described the getaway car as a black Honda.

The third robbery led to a vehicle pursuit then foot pursuit, a police source said. A police helicopter was also involved in the pursuit. Penn Police arrested the suspects around 11 p.m. near the corner of 44th and Baltimore. Their vehicle was still parked there this morning (see photo). There were a total of eight victims in this string of robberies, according to the police source. The investigation is continuing.

UPDATE (1:49 pm): There were three suspects, two men and a woman, who robbed a total of 11 people last night, CBSPhilly reports. In addition to the robberies mentioned earlier, two people were robbed of their iPhones at 43rd and Regent at 8:45 p.m. and a man was robbed of some cash near 42nd and Ludlow at 9 p.m. Two suspects, a man and a woman, both 25, were arrested. The police are still searching for the third robber.

A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot in the face during an attempted robbery last night near 51st Street and Willows Avenue. He is expected to survive.

The victim told police that another man came up to him at about 9:45 p.m. and tried to rob him, then took out a handgun and shot him once in the mouth. The suspect then ran down 51st Street toward Pentridge.

Police said that they have encountered the victim before. “A neighborhood beef has not been ruled out,” said Joe Murray of the Southwest Detectives.
