Adopt-a-Dog: Ginger

Posted on 15 March 2012 by WPL

This week’s adoptable dog is Ginger. She was at the shelter last summer and got adopted in the nick of time. Unfortunately, her new owner got sick and can’t keep her. Ginger is a young, reddish-gold haired terrier mix. She is house-trained, crate trained, knows commands, is spayed, up to date on her shots and is ready to move back in to a home.

Ginger lived with older children in her last home but young kids make her uncomfortable. She likes some other dogs but can be picky – and Ginger is definitely a no-cats kind of dog! She walks well on a leash, loves to snuggle on the sofa, is great in the car and enjoys a refreshing swim when it’s hot out.

Ginger is not handling the shelter environment very well and needs a rescue, foster home or adopter as soon as possible.

Email her Pen Pal Lara at larakelly [at] comcast.net for more information. If adopted, Lara will pay the adoption fee, provide a crate and provide 1 month of food.

Adopt-a-Dog: Roxy. Update: Adopted!

Posted on 08 March 2012 by WPL

Update (03/20): Roxy has been adopted!

Roxy is a 2-3 year old female American Bull Dog mix weighing 55lbs.

Roxy was found running around at 53rd and Walton a couple of weeks ago. She has had a rough life thus far. She was taken away from her owner as part of a cruelty case earlier in the year by the SPCA. She was fostered, somehow ended up on the street, and is now in stable foster care. Despite her past experiences she is an amazingly loving dog and deeply appreciative of every bit of affection and care given to her.

Roxy is very responsive. She is crate-trained, knows sit and come, and would learn other commands quickly. She is very playful when outside, but around the house she is very mellow. She has never chewed anything. She has done well meeting other dogs on leash, but would do best in a home with no cats. Roxy is spayed, up to date on shots, and ready to find a permanent home.

For more information, or to set up a meet-up please contact Rob at 267-968-5687 or RSPetraitis [at] gmail.com.

Adopt-a-Dog: Apollo

Posted on 01 March 2012 by WPL

This week’s featured dog is Apollo, an adorable honey-colored 1-2 year old mutt (Pit Bull Terrier/Mastiff mix). Whatever he may be, he is one handsome dog!

Though he weighs about 64 lbs, Apollo is on the medium size with shorter legs and a big old loveable head. Apollo is pretty nervous being in the loud, crowded shelter but is dealing with it as well as he can. He stays lower to the ground while walking through the kennels, but once outside he will climb into your lap for attention and he loves being petted.

Once he’s loosened up a bit, he loves to play tag around the runs. Apollo showed no issues with basic or advanced handling and actually seemed to enjoy the attention. He also showed no issues with food. He was pretty distracted during his cat-test so he’ll need another one before going home with any.

Apollo was a little uncomfortable meeting the more pushy dogs at the shelter, but did not react negatively. He likely just needs some time to feel more comfortable there before he’ll begin to play with them. Please bring your resident dogs down to the shelter to meet Apollo!

Apollo has lived with young children in his last home and was playful with them, per his former family. Families with children under 12 should bring them down to meet him. Apollo shouldn’t go home with children under 5 right now since he is still on the shyer side and will likely be more energetic once in a home. Please come meet this sweet boy today!

Apollo is located at ACCT Philadelphia, 111 W. Hunting Park Avenue. Adoption hours are 1-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekends. If you are interested in fostering, please contact nsmith [at] pspca.org or jsweeney [at] pspca.org. Adopt-a-Dog: Ginger

Posted on 06 October 2011 by WPL

This week’s dog is Ginger, a female pit bull/terrier mix. She’s tan brindle with distinctive white markings, approximately 15 months old. Ginger has been living with West Philly resident Kathleen since late May, when she found her wandering in the street. Kathleen has had her spayed and microchipped, and she’s healthy and current on all her shots.

Ginger is a very affectionate, energetic and smart dog, and is excellent with small children. Unfortunately, however, she hasn’t integrated well with the four cats who were already part of the family; she isn’t dangerously aggressive with them (no growling or snapping) but overly persistent in wanting to play with them while they – being cats – want to be left alone. She needs more training and attention than Kathleen is able to give her.

The right home for her would be with an owner who doesn’t have other animals, but could put the time into training her; she’s a wonderful dog, but her current family is just not the right family for her. If you think Ginger might be the right dog for you, please email Kathleen and tell her a bit about yourself. Here’s Kathleen’s email address: khturner32 [at] gmail.com

Adopt-a-Dog: Jillian

Posted on 31 August 2011 by WPL

Jillian - adoptable dogThis week’s featured dog is Jillian. Jillian is a young, super friendly pit bull terrier mix. She is a petite girl – she weighs about 26 pounds when she came to the shelter. She’s only 6-12 months old.

Jillian came to the shelter on August 18, 2011 and has a sad story. Her owner left her with a friend when they were moving and they never came back to get her!

She is very excited at the shelter and just wants to get out of her cage. She’s locked up in a small space for long periods of time and, being a puppy, she really needs lots of exercise and stimulation and someone to teach her how to behave. When she does get out, she is happy to run around and play. She craves interaction and companionship and needs some structure and stability.

Jillian absolutely adores people and can barely contain her excitement when they show her attention and kindness. The shelter staff introduced her to some cats there and she wasn’t very interested in them. The shelter also tested her with some of her dog shelter mates and she did just fine. She was way more interested in attention from her human friends.

Because she can get a little riled up (although she will most likely settle down in a home once she gets a little older), Jillian probably should go to a home with bigger kids (over 5 years) that can handle her playing with them.

The shelter where Jillian lives right now has a very high intake rate and only so much room for puppies. Unfortunately, the shelter has to accept every animal that is dropped at its door! This puts Jillian and her furry friends there at risk every day that they stay there. Even though she’s a young, healthy, super friendly, affectionate girl, her life is at risk! So if you can find room in your home and your heart, please foster or adopt her!

Jillian is up to date on all of her shots, microchipped and will be neutered when you take her home.

Jillian currently resides at the PSPCA’s Animal Care & Control Team (ACCT), 111 W. Hunting Park Avenue. For more information call: 267-385-3800. ACCT is open 365 days a year. If you cannot adopt her permanently but would like to help anyways, you can always consider fostering Jillian until she finds her happy ending.

Adopt-a-Pet: Kahuna

Posted on 01 June 2011 by WPL

Adoptable dog Kahuna
Kahuna

Today’s pet is Kahuna. He is currently living at the ACCT shelter.

Kahuna is a mostly white, 3-5 year old boy with some brindle patches, and a cute little brown spot above his eye. He’s a medium sized dog.

He loves to play with toys – rope toys, squeaky toys, and kongs. Another great thing about him is that he loves being around people.

Kahuna has a pen pal who is teaching him lots of stuff. He’s learning commands, which he’s doing very well with because he’s very smart. His pen pal is also teaching him to walk like a gentleman on the leash by using an Easy Walk Harness. Kahuna walks pretty well now, but can get a little excited when he sees people or other dogs.

Kahuna loves other dogs so if you want to see him you can bring your dogs with you. He is up to date on all of his shots. He is also microchipped and scheduled to be neutered. In other words: he is ready to go home with you.

If you’d like to meet Kahuna, stop by 111 W. Hunting Park Ave, walk straight to Adoptions (or Lifesaving, if you’d like to foster him). For more information call 267-385-3800 or email: acctadoptions [at] pspca.org

If you cannot adopt him permanently but would like to help anyways, you can consider fostering Kahuna until he finds his happy ending. Fostering will save not only this dog’s life but also the life of the dog that would move into Kahuna’s kennel at ACCT.
