Adopt-a-Dog: Buckley

Posted on 22 February 2013 by WPL

BuckleyThis black and white cutie is somewhere between one and two years old, and was transferred into ACCT Philly by one of their rescue partners. He has some basic commands mastered, so it seems that at one point he may have had a family. He’s looking to get back into a home so he can work on ‘snuggle’ with his new family.

Buckley is a young boy with some energy to burn. But, he also likes to sit in the lap of his human for some quiet time. Buckley knows “sit” and is starting to figure out “down.” He enjoys playing with toys (stuffing-free please) and running around the play yard. Buckley is learning to walk like a good boy on an easy-walk harness (it helps to reduce the amount of pulling that he does on a traditional leash and collar) and will check in with his human to see if he’s doing a good job.

Buckley is eager to meet new dogs and with slow introductions does very well with them.

If you are interested in meeting this sweet boy, head on down to ACCT with your family (and your dog if you already have one). You can find him at 111 West Hunting Park Avenue. Buckley is part of the Pen Pal Program at ACCT and has two volunteers dedicated to finding him a great home or foster care. His Pen Pals also spend quality time with him trying to keep him as stress free as possible. Buckley’s Pen Pals also work on teaching him to be the best dog he can be, socializing him with people and other dogs, teaching him some basic commands and giving him plenty of snuggles. If you have any questions about Buckley or adopting from ACCT, please email his pen pals: larakelly@comcast.net or katherine.ACCT@gmail.com.

Adopt-a-Dog: Chili

Posted on 08 February 2013 by WPL

chiliChili is one of the ACCT shelter pups that have a cold and need a warm couch to recover. She is an extremely sweet middle aged gal looking for a new forever home. She came to the shelter as a stray so now she’s ready to hop into your home and love you forever!

Chili also has an adorable and awesome personality. She’s about five-six years old so she’s the perfect age for you if you are looking for a chilled out middle aged dog who wants nothing more than love and affection. She is full of personality and she always has a smile on her face. She is very well behaved and she is happy to do whatever you are doing, she’s just a go with the flow type of dog.

She’s easy to handle and she walks well on the leash. She is a dog who will be happy to go on a walk with you, go out to lunch with you, play with toys by your feet, or curl up in your lap. She really loves making new friends, especially people friends.

You might chuckle at her because she has a sausage-like body and a small head but it’s what makes her adorable! She could stand to get in better shape but it’s nothing a proper diet and some walks won’t fix! Chili loves her treats and also really loves to play fetch with a tennis ball and she doesn’t mind it when you take it from her to throw again. She did well with the dogs she has met so far at the shelter, especially ones who are chill and mellow like her.

Chili is a fun girl to be around and she can’t help but make everyone around her smile, so bring her home and she’ll make you smile every day. If you want to find out more information about this dog or if you would like to meet her you can email her two friends who hang out with her a lot at: Always8bball@aol.com or Anastasiam1981@yahoo.com.

Adopt (or foster) a dog: Penny

Posted on 24 January 2013 by WPL

pennyPenny, a Pit Bull mix,  has been at the ACCT shelter for a while and the stress starts getting to her. She was brought to the shelter because her owner was moving and now she’s ready to find her forever home! Penny is a 48 pound adult, but she still has plenty of puppy energy. She’s a bit shy in her kennel, but when she’s outside, her tail never stops wagging. Penny’s favorite thing to do is lean against her friends at the shelter and snuggle. In fact, if you stop petting her, she will nudge you with her nose to get you going again. This is a girl who knows what she wants, and what she wants is to go home with her new family! Penny has lived with kids, other dogs, and cats. She already knows how to sit, and she’s working on more commands like “touch” and “leave it.” Best of all, she’s even housetrained!

Penny has been at the shelter way too long. If you think you can give this sweet girl a home, bring your whole family and any resident dogs down to the shelter to meet her today! Please make sure you have your landlord’s permission to own a dog such as Penny.

Email her pen pal at kcain84@gmail.com with any questions. To check the status of an animal, call 267-385-3800, email acctpetfinder@gmail.com, or go to acctphilly.com for more information.

Penny is up to date on her shots, microchipped and will be spayed before coming home with you. If you cannot adopt Penny permanently but would like to help anyways, fostering her and helping her find her forever home would not only help Penny but also another dog that could move into her kennel.

Check out this video about Penny:

Posted on 13 December 2012 by WPL

BeatrixSweet, loveable Beatrix is in search of a forever home – not just for the holidays! She’s a 1-2 year old playful pretty girl! She loves playing tug and fetch! She also loooooves people! When she sees a new person she gets the butt wiggles! She’s a young girl so she still has some of her puppy ways! She’s actually named after Beatrix Potter because she hops and bounces and spins just like a bunny rabbit!

Beatrix is really good about sharing her toys. She’s kind of scared of other dogs though. She does well with really young puppies and her brother – she came in the shelter with her brother. His name is Cleveland and he’s awesome too, just like Beatrix.

You can contact them by sending an email to: todorov.lulu@gmail.com. Come meet her soon and bring everyone in your family (dogs included) to make sure she is a good fit for everybody!

Murphy3You love chocolate, right? Then you’ll love Murphy! He’s a young, handsome fella with a beautiful dark red brown coat. Murphy is trying to get out of the shelter and into a loving, caring home for the holidays.

Murphy loves to say hello to everyone and is very friendly. He loves to walk on a harness and will barely pull you which make the walks much more pleasant. He loves a game of fetch with a tennis ball and is learning “Drop it” very quickly.

He weighs in at only 50 lbs and is a medium-sized dude. And the best yet: he is housetrained too! He is also up-to-date on all of his shots and will be microchipped and neutered before he comes home with you.

Send an email to todorov.lulu@gmail.com with any additional questions or come on down to the shelter and meet him. You will not be disappointed once you see this handsome mug in person!

Adopt-a-Dog: Rocky

Posted on 07 November 2012 by WPL

Currently, Rocky resides at the ACCT shelter at 111 W. Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. He is EXTREMELY URGENT and must leave the shelter before Nov. 11. Rocky was very close to being euthanized a few days ago because the shelter is full but, luckily, the person that sedated him for euthanasia found a microchip! This saved his life – at least for now. His ID hold will be up in a few days (it’s very unlikely that his owners are coming for him), but this guy definitely deserves a home!

Rocky is a young guy, only 1-2 years old, and has so much love to share! He is a sweet boy who loves to wag his tail and wiggle his butt.

He is a medium sized, 40 pound, light brown colored Terrier & American Staffordshire Mix. He is a gorgeous boy with ears that stick straight up and has a wrinkly forehead. He was found as a stray and has been living at the shelter for two months now. During these two months, he was a quiet dog just waiting patiently to be relieved from his kennel. Rocky now has two friends who are dedicated in keeping him happy and training him in the areas that he needs help.

Rocky is being trained how to walk nice while out for walks with a Gentle Leader which will go home with Rocky once he is adopted. He does well on the gentle leader and is making great improvements. Rocky also needs help with his excitement when meeting new dogs.

Rocky is also a very smart boy, he already learned the commands “sit” and “down”. He is treat motivated and he has been easy to work with. He will take treats from you very gently. Rocky went for a car ride and he did great in the car. Overall, he is a very affectionate dog who loves attention. Rocky’s pen pals (volunteers who dedicate their time to specifically work with him) will offer his foster home or adoptive home his gentle leader, a crate, and continued training support and suggestions. He really deserves a chance out of the shelter and can make a really great dog!

Adoption hours: Mon-Fri 1-8, Sat & Sun 10-5.
Foster hours: Mon-Sun 10-6.

Want more information on Rocky? Contact his friends at: Always8bball@aol.com or Anastasiam1981@yahoo.com!

Adopt-a-Dog: Simon

Posted on 25 October 2012 by WPL

Simon is a 10-month-old puppy and has until Thursday, Oct. 25, at 6 pm to get out of ACCT-Philly into a foster or adoptive home. He has been an incredible trooper, having lived at ACCT since August 1. He’s kept himself emotionally together, but now he has injured his knee and needs a place to go. Simon needs eight weeks of crate rest and lots of TLC to let his knee heal. Simon also needs a weight loss program–he sure hasn’t lost his appetite living at the shelter!

With weight loss and crate rest, Simon’s knee would probably heal on its own because he should only weigh about 37 lbs. Simon is a really smart dog who loves his people. Once his knee is healed, he’d do very well with an active family with older kids.

Simon says that cats are soooo great that he probably shouldn’t live with them. But he could live with another dog!

Could you be Simon’s savior and foster him? All medications and food will be supplied by ACCT-Philly and his Pen Pal, his special volunteer at the shelter, will supply a crate. All you need to provide is the warm comfy home and a dedication to saving his life.

Email todorov.lulu@gmail.com to get in touch with Simon’s Pen Pal and learn more, or if you’re sure you’re ready to save him, call ACCT at 267-385-3800. Press 0 and ask for Lifesaving. ACCT is located at 111 W. Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
