(12/2/2015): The opening of Clarkville bar and restaurant at 43rd and Baltimore is getting closer. According to its owner Leigh Maida, who we spoke to in the fall, the tentative opening date was Dec. 1, but it hasn’t opened yet. Clarkville’s opening was postponed a couple of times before, with the latest reason for delay being problems with electricity in the building. Maida and her business partners Brendan Kelly and Brendan Hartranft are renting the two-story, former Best House Pizza space at 43rd and Baltimore. But here’s some encouraging news. According to their latest tweet, the restaurant’s opening is very close. The executive chef has also been revealed on the Clarkville website. It’s Justin Bennett, who has been in charge of Local 44’s menu for the past three years. Earlier this year, Clarkville owners said that it would be “a little less beer forward and a little more food forward” than Local 44. Stay tuned for more information.

Here’s an update on some local existing and upcoming restaurants.

• Work is at full steam to prepare Clarkville bar and restaurant for opening this Fall. The building at 43rd and Baltimore across from Clark Park, which used to house Best House Pizzeria, recently had some parts of the old facade stripped off to expose the red brick underneath. And here’s what it looks like from 43rd Street. The building already has a large green “Clarkville” sign painted on it.

The opening date for the new bar and restaurant hasn’t been revealed yet. We’ll keep you posted. By the way, the owners, Leigh Maida, Brendan Kelly and Brendan Hartranft, who already own three restaurants in Philadelphia, including West Philly’s Local 44, are opening a Montreal-inspired bistro, called Coeur, on 8th and Christian on Sept. 15. Clarkville restaurant and bar is expected to open at former Best House Pizza space at 43rd and Baltimore in Fall 2015.

Here’s an update on Clarkville, the bar and restaurant planned for Baltimore Avenue across from Clark Park, from co-owner Leigh Maida. The lease for the former Best House Pizzeria space at 43rd and Baltimore was signed in November, and the building owner is still working on renovation and repairs, according to Maida. The renovation work is now expected to be completed early next month, after which Maida and her partners will take possession of the space and start setting up their restaurant.

If everything goes according to plans the restaurant should be open in very early fall, says Maida.

In the meantime, Maida and her partners, Brendan Kelly and Brendan Hartranft, who also own Local 44, are busy working on the menu and getting as much of the details “buttoned up” in advance of taking over the space as possible. By the way, the name of the new restaurant is just Clarkville without “Beer” after it as was reported earlier. “We’ll have a pretty nice draft wine list at Clarkville, as well as a very steady flag-ship centric craft beer list,” Maida says.

The restaurant also inherits a giant pizza oven and dough mixer that came with the space. “Those items will be put to use immediately in the preparation of a pizza-like offerings,” Maida said in an earlier statement.

Tentative plans for a new restaurant and bar at 4301 Baltimore Ave. – formerly Best House Pizza – include a stripped down facade, craft beer on tap, second floor dining and, possibly, pizza by the slice.

The owners of Local 44 introduced their plans to open the establishment, tentatively named “Clarkville,” to the Spruce Hill Community Association planning committee and a roomful of nearby neighbors last night.

Plans call for the removal of the awning and the installation of floor-to-ceiling windows on the restaurant’s first floor, which will also include a bar that serves only tap beer, wine and high-end spirits. In other words, no Jägermeister shots.  Continue Reading

Friends of Clark Park is hosting a Charles Dickens’ Birthday celebration this Sunday, Feb. 4.

The event starts at 2 p.m. at Resurrection Church at 42nd and Pine where there will be a reading of Dickens’ literature as well as a performance by local Morris Men dancers.

“We will likely cut the cake and sing happy birthday for Charles Dickens at the Church and then walk down to the statue to sing it again one more time. Once the event is over, we will all head over to Clarkville for pizza,” writes Cameron O’Grady, a board member of Friends of Clark Park. “This is also our first time doing the full event again after COVID.”

All are invited to celebrate Charles Dickens’ Birthday!

Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m., meet at the Charles Dickens & Little Nell Statue in Clark Park near 43rd & Chester Ave. There will be dramatic readings (weather permitting) followed by festivities and refreshments at Clarkville, 43rd & Baltimore Ave.

This longstanding tradition is hosted by the Friends of Clark Park.
