Despite a few high-profile crimes in recent days in the Spruce Hill neighborhood, including the burglary of Lil’ Pop Shop near 44th and Spruce on Monday and robberies at 45th and 46th and Larchwood, this summer has been fairly quiet in the University City area, according to crime stats released by the University City District earlier this week.

The stats cover an area from 50th Street east to the Schuylkill and Spring Garden (in Powelton) and Market (in Walnut Hill) south to Woodland Avenue (see map). They show a decrease in residential burglaries and robberies in the area compared to last summer and a significant drop since a rash of burglaries and robberies in February and March.

Lil’ Pop Shop owner Jeanne Chang says someone smashed the glass front door at the shop overnight on July 28 and stole cash, a crime similar to many reported in December and January. Police caught that guy though. A police source said that a man was arrested for a series of burglaries, including several burglaries at local businesses, may have committed as many as 20 in the area.

University City, like much of city, has seen a fairly steady drop in crime in recent years. The drop is likely steep here because of the increased activity of a number of public safety organizations, including the Philadelphia Police Department, Penn Police, the UCD Ambassadors and several neighborhood watch groups.

 

Here’s some great summer news: The 2014 pool season in Philadelphia officially opens today, which means that dozens of public pools and spray grounds will begin welcoming visitors across the city (though it looks like many of them will start opening on June 23, 24). Overall, 69 pools and nine spray grounds will be open this summer, according to an announcement by Philadelphia Parks and Rec. Public pool hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Apart from recreational swimming, Philadelphia Parks and Rec will also offer youth swimming lessons at several public pools. It’s always a good idea to call your neighborhood recreation center before heading to the pool since there their hours of operation may change or some special activities may be scheduled.

Editor’s Note: Dozens of articles have been written about trash in Philadelphia. So what are some grassroots, block-by-block solutions to the problem? More trash cans? Culture change? It’s a tricky one.

It’s no secret that Philadelphia is an unkempt city. After all, the riverside metropolis has landed on the top end of a few “dirtiest cities in America” listicles—chief among them, Travel+Leisure’s 2012 roundup (in at number six) and Forbes’ extensive 20 Dirtiest Cities list (in at number three).

You don’t need lists to tell you that, though. Look down your block, in a vacant lot, or any SEPTA station, and you’re bound to see— and smell — trash. Sure, it’s gotten better over the years, but not by much. And, as Ryan Briggs wrote for City Paper in May, the politics of cleaning up Philadelphia are just as messy as its streets.

In the interest of sifting through those politics, we here at West Philly Local were curious about how public trash receptacles played into West Philly’s litter problem. Why were there multiple public trashcans on certain corners while other streets didn’t have a trashcan for a few blocks?

As West Philly Local reader, Victoria, tweeted us under the handle @vvictorrriaa, “What trashcans on our streets? Lived her for 18+ yrs + there aren’t any on my block or surrounding blocks.”

So we turned to the City for some answers. Turns out, the City normally places public wire baskets on business corridors with heavy foot traffic “where there is a need and the expectation that they will be an effective tool to control litter,” June Cantor, spokesperson for the Philadelphia Streets Department, told West Philly Local.

“The most heavily littered areas are commercial corridors that lack strong business associations and some residential areas. Public trash receptacles serve a role in the control of litter[,] but they are not a panacea,” Cantor told West Philly Local. “Property owners, residents and businesses need to have civic pride, take personal responsibility for their environment and engage the community in order to effectively control litter.”

Community Development Corporations, local community groups, businesses, local schools, and block captains also have a hand in providing public trashcans, West Philly Local was told by city officials. For example, in the Powelton Village area, University City District and Drexel University mostly provide and maintain public bins within their respective borders, according to Powelton Village Civic Association President Michael Jones. Roebuck says he leans on his background as a trained teacher and former Drexel University professor to inform his work as an educational advocate. Through his years of service in the legislature, and under former Governor Ed Rendell, Roebuck lays claims to many successes, including an improved pre-K system and an increase in educational funding. And, on his off-time, he says, you can find him at any local school, reading to grade school students or tutoring second graders.

The LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT 2.0 and EV3 product lines allow for hundreds of possibilities of robots, and each week at camp new ideas and projects are presented. In addition to building, campers learn how to program robots using a computer, how to use Bluetooth ® for wireless control, and work in teams every step of the way.

There are three levels of Robotics & Technology curriculum used at camp, and campers are divided by age and ability to ensure the best experience possible for each camper. Campers at all levels participate in a camp tournament called ROBOWARS. This “all camp” tournament takes place on the Friday of each week, where all groups “free build” a robot that battle head to in a tournament setting. Using the powerful program Multimedia Fusion 2, campers learn how to create their own video games for use on computers, and create Apps compatible with iOS® devices (the Ipad® and iPhone®) and the Android™. No previous experience is necessary, however more complicated projects are offered to campers based upon their age and ability. Starting with a blank screen, campers begin with a single frame where they place objects, scenery, a scoreboard, and number of lives. They then use the events editor to program how objects behave in this environment. The games and Apps are then expanded to multiple frames and levels, resulting in a complete multi-level arcade and/or platform game/App.

In addition to using objects and scenery from Multimedia Fusion 2, campers can bring outside objects and scenery that they design into the game, or manipulate the design of objects within the Multimedia Fusion 2 library. In this sense, campers learn not only programming logic, but also animation and design. Multi-level decision-making teaches campers to consider the game as a whole, beyond just a single frame, and encourages vision and planning.

Stretch your imagination, improve your skills, and work individually or collaboratively (on our own private server) in the same virtual world! Our own servers allow campers to work together on the same projects, creating fun and dynamic group interaction! Using Minecraft as a learning tool, campers participate in one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms to create their own world. By using blocks and various resources, campers will literally “mine” and “craft” their own creations, with some project options including: dream homes, towers, castles, caves, roller coasters and entire amusement parks. Campers may also construct famous buildings and structures like the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, the Egyptian Pyramids, and/or structures of their own choosing.

Projects will include the construction of a train system or roller coaster allowing all players to tour and travel the entire environment for observation, work efficiency, and gameplay. Campers may choose to work with others or on their own, but group participation is highly encouraged. By working in the same world with multiple players, campers will assume different roles (builder, architect, resource gatherer, protector, etc…) where communication and fulfilling one’s role is very important to the group’s collective success.

The EMBHSSC is a two-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science knowledge and skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is organized to provide activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences for students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the Fall of 2013. The camp promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and supports historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities.

Students attend the camp free of charge. Students currently in grade 5, 6, or 7 who have an interest in science and mathematics, at least a B average in science and mathematics courses and a passing score on the state’s standardized science and mathematics tests are eligible to apply.

CIT Leadership Program (Lavner Camps)

For teenagers ages 13-15

The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Leadership Program is for motivated teenagers who want to learn and develop new skills while working with children in a camp setting. CITs receive an orientation-training prior to camp and become certified in CPR/First Aid. During the summer, CITs work under the close supervision of our instructors and camp directors, and an evaluation is provided each week (for learning & improvement purposes.) This program helps to prepare our CITs for future work experience and will also bolster their résumés. It also gives our CITs a chance to have a fun and productive summer where they can work in specialty camps of their choice!

To become part of our CIT Leadership Program, an applicant must “register” on lavnercamps.com and complete an application process. The CIT Leadership Program is offered for every camp that is offered at the University of Pennsylvania this summer. This camp is a combination of scripting, acting, directing, and editing. When starting out in film, whether in front of the camera or behind the scenes, it is always important to understand and appreciate all aspects of production. Campers who get a taste of everything can decide what they like and want to pursue in the future. Campers are grouped by age and ability level. If time allows, campers may also create and film commercials.

The camp is located at the historic Northwestern Equestrian Facility in Wissahickon Park. It is a terrific experience for children ages 8-12 who love horses. Each day, campers will have a riding lesson, and learn something new about horses. The afternoons are filled with fun arts & crafts, and games in the meadow. This program is the perfect fit for kids who have no previous horse experience, as well as those who are currently riding. By the end of the week, it’s fun to see how much progress campers have made in this concentrated riding opportunity. The program is staffed with full-time adult professionals and three additional counselors for each week.

Kids’ Yoga Summer Camp

This full-day camp is filled with fun, educational activities, and games. Yoga camp is unique because your kids will spend time together as a team building trust and friendships that fall outside of a typical competitive sports camp, yet has all the benefits of developing a love for movement and play. The West Philadelphia Cooperative School (WPCS) is welcoming non-member families to join in the fun for its summer camp program. Summer camp days are filled with opportunities for open-ended play and exploration. Our experienced teachers lead a structured circle time that anchors the day with books, songs, and group activities connected to a different theme for each 2-week session. Summer camp themes are often related to nature, and children spend much of the day outdoors in our shaded yard and on the back deck where water play and fun sensory projects are offered daily. Trips to local playgrounds and to the Pentridge Children’s Garden help connect our school to our neighborhood and community.

In an era when teen girls idolize reality TV stars and scantily clad music artists, the non-profit Evoluer House is offering two far more positive development workshops for area teen girls: The Evoluer Personal Development Workshop and the Evoluer Youth Workforce Development Program. Taught by area youth development and education professionals, Evoluer’s Personal Development Workshop seeks to inspire a positive self-image and ambition in girls through an eight-week, reality-based learning experience. Topics include “Loving the Skin You’re In,” “Your Life, Your Goals,” financial literacy, internet safety and etiquette. The Youth Workforce Development program focuses on the personal, resume-writing and communication skills girls need to land a job, keep a job, and advance in their lives and careers.

Camp fee:  The programs are free, or require a small fee for applicants who do not meet income guidelines.

For ages 3-8

With lots of different movement classes, field trips, swimming, art projects, dancing, and performing there’s plenty of space for all kids to expend energy, express themselves, and find something new they love. Program may vary week-to-week, but specialty classes can include Hip Hop, Music, Yoga, Ballet, and Tap Dance. Each week will also feature ZoomDance performance workshops centered around one of our favorite stories. Pick your schedule: You can choose which weeks to attend, which days of the week you’ll join, and half or whole days.
