Dog bites neighbor, rabies shots needed, owner sought

Posted on 24 February 2013 by WPL

A West Philly resident, Nati Passow, was bitten by a dog last night while he was biking down Larchwood Avenue between 44th and 45th Streets. He is looking for the dog’s owner to see if the dog was up to date on all of his shots, in order to avoid a series of rabies shots. Here’s what Nati wrote us in an email:

On Saturday night around 9:45 I was biking down Larchwood between 45th and 44th. A woman was walking her dog and the dog ran at me. She called after him (that’s how I know the name), but Clyde proceeded to bite my leg. It’s not too bad of a bite, but it broke skin, so I went to HUP, and because I didn’t know the dog, they started me on the rabies vaccine. I’d really prefer not to have to get the remaining 3 doses, and they said that if I track down the owners and learn that Clyde has gotten all of his shots, I’m good to go.

If you know someone in the area with a dog named Clyde, please put them in touch with me. It was a very quick interaction, but I believe Clyde was a big dog, slender build, with a lighter colored coat.

If you know anyone in the neighborhood who has a dog named Clyde that fits the provided description, please email Nati as soon as possible at npassow@gmail.com, as he will need to return to HUP in three days for the next dose.

Adopt-a-Dog: Buckley

Posted on 22 February 2013 by WPL

BuckleyThis black and white cutie is somewhere between one and two years old, and was transferred into ACCT Philly by one of their rescue partners. He has some basic commands mastered, so it seems that at one point he may have had a family. He’s looking to get back into a home so he can work on ‘snuggle’ with his new family.

Buckley is a young boy with some energy to burn. But, he also likes to sit in the lap of his human for some quiet time. Buckley knows “sit” and is starting to figure out “down.” He enjoys playing with toys (stuffing-free please) and running around the play yard. Buckley is learning to walk like a good boy on an easy-walk harness (it helps to reduce the amount of pulling that he does on a traditional leash and collar) and will check in with his human to see if he’s doing a good job.

Buckley is eager to meet new dogs and with slow introductions does very well with them.

If you are interested in meeting this sweet boy, head on down to ACCT with your family (and your dog if you already have one). You can find him at 111 West Hunting Park Avenue. Buckley is part of the Pen Pal Program at ACCT and has two volunteers dedicated to finding him a great home or foster care. His Pen Pals also spend quality time with him trying to keep him as stress free as possible. Buckley’s Pen Pals also work on teaching him to be the best dog he can be, socializing him with people and other dogs, teaching him some basic commands and giving him plenty of snuggles. If you have any questions about Buckley or adopting from ACCT, please email his pen pals: larakelly@comcast.net or katherine.ACCT@gmail.com.

New security camera mapping program lets public know who’s watching them

Posted on 01 February 2013 by WPL

CommunityCam

CommunityCam maps public and private security cameras in the city.

Using surveillance videos in solving a crime has become a common practice for law enforcement officials since many businesses, organizations and individuals now install security cameras as a safety measure. But what about simple folks who need this information but don’t have access to it? In an effort to help residents prevent and solve crime, VideoSurveillance.com has recently rolled out the CommunityCam program that maps public and private security cameras throughout Philadelphia. The program is first launching in our city, with a goal to eventually expand nationwide.

Anyone can use the map either for locating cameras that may have captured a criminal activity or for choosing a safer walking route. The map is crowdsourced so any resident, business owner, neighborhood group, or government organization can add locations of surveillance cameras to help their neighbors.

“Unfortunately, information about security cameras has not been made available to the public so someone who has been hurt, wronged, or worse does not have access to all the resources that could help make things right. With this effort, we hope that neighbors will start working together to help each other and to make all cities and towns safe,” said Josh Daniels, President of VideoSurveillance.com.

A neighbor, Stephanie, said that the program is interesting, too, because it’s crowdsourced – so neighbors and residents can help each other out. “As a young(ish) single woman, new to Philadelphia, this makes me feel more secure,” said Stephanie.

Here’s how you can use CommunityCam:

– Visit http://www.videosurveillance.com/communitycam

– Navigate the map using the directional arrows

– Click the blue balloons to see addresses for and types of cameras

– If you have an outdoor surveillance camera, you’re encouraged to add it to the map.

Posted on 13 December 2012 by WPL

BeatrixSweet, loveable Beatrix is in search of a forever home – not just for the holidays! She’s a 1-2 year old playful pretty girl! She loves playing tug and fetch! She also loooooves people! When she sees a new person she gets the butt wiggles! She’s a young girl so she still has some of her puppy ways! She’s actually named after Beatrix Potter because she hops and bounces and spins just like a bunny rabbit!

Beatrix is really good about sharing her toys. She’s kind of scared of other dogs though. She does well with really young puppies and her brother – she came in the shelter with her brother. His name is Cleveland and he’s awesome too, just like Beatrix.

Bea is up-to-date on all of her shots and will be spayed and microchipped when you take her home. Awesome, right? She has two special people dedicated to keeping her happy in the shelter. You can contact them by sending an email to: todorov.lulu@gmail.com. Come meet her soon and bring everyone in your family (dogs included) to make sure she is a good fit for everybody!

Murphy3You love chocolate, right? Then you’ll love Murphy! He’s a young, handsome fella with a beautiful dark red brown coat. Murphy is trying to get out of the shelter and into a loving, caring home for the holidays.

Murphy loves to say hello to everyone and is very friendly. He loves to walk on a harness and will barely pull you which make the walks much more pleasant. He loves a game of fetch with a tennis ball and is learning “Drop it” very quickly.

He weighs in at only 50 lbs and is a medium-sized dude. And the best yet: he is housetrained too! He is also up-to-date on all of his shots and will be microchipped and neutered before he comes home with you.

Send an email to todorov.lulu@gmail.com with any additional questions or come on down to the shelter and meet him. You will not be disappointed once you see this handsome mug in person!

Adopt-two-Cats: Elsa and Emily

Posted on 05 December 2012 by WPL

Elsa.

Elsa and Emily are lovely, petite tuxedo kittens (about 10-12 months old), rescued this past summer near Penn’s campus. Elsa is the cutest grey & white girl, with a white triangle outlining her little grey nose. She was a bit shy at first, but has become quite the cuddle bug and is very receptive to hugs and kisses from her foster mom & dad. Elsa has an irresistible raspy chirp (much like a lion cub’s), is quite chatty, and purrs whenever you’re nearby.

Lovely Emily is the black & white babe. She adores belly and chin rubs. She’s got a streak of tomboy in her; loves to chase and wrestle with our big tabby guy! They’re just the sweetest and gentlest of girls. Both are fine with being held, and will be happy to sit on your lap and be combed and fussed over. Neither is over demanding of attention. Elsa and Em’ have become companion kitties since their respective rescues, so we would love for them to be adopted as a pair.

Emily.

Kitty FACTS: The girls have been fully vetted (tested, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped) and are disease free. Paperwork from their vetting will be included, along with a few of their favorite things. Indoor only. Kitties must keep their claws! They eat a primarily canned food diet. Excellent litterbox manners. Okay with gentle dogs. Appropriate screening and a willingness to contribute towards their vetting (or donation to a local rescue group) shouldn’t be a problem for potential adopters. Feel free to email with any questions about the girls or to arrange a meeting. Including a brief history of your experience with kitties, description of current home situation, and the name of your vet would be most helpful.

For more information contact Linda at lml3@verizon.net.

Dozens still without power due to faulty underground cable. Update: power restored

Posted on 29 November 2012 by WPL

Update: Service was restored to all the affected residents just before midnight last night.

11/28, 5:48 p.m.: About 930 residents lost their power on Tuesday night, shortly after 11:00 p.m., in the Spruce Hill and Garden Court areas due to an issue with an underground cable at 49th and Spruce Streets, according to PECO spokesperson Liz Williamson. Service was restored to about 865 of those residents by about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.

There are currently 65 residents in the vicinity of 49th and Spruce Streets without service. “PECO has already contacted those customers to let them know that we are working to replace the underground cable in their area and that their service may not be restored for several hours while we make repairs,” Williamson said at about 5 p.m.
