Christmas Concert donations to support St. Francis de Sales restoration projects

Posted on 13 December 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

St_Francis_de_Sales_(Philadelphia)_1Community members are invited to St. Francis de Sales Church (47th and Springfield) for a candlelight Christmas concert under the dome this Wednesday (Dec. 14). The church’s choir will preview pieces from their annual Midnight Mass carol service, and their lineup this year will showcase pieces by Vaughan-Williams, Victoria, Franck, Garau and others, as well as feature a carol sing-along.

The concert is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged. All proceeds go toward restoration projects in the church building, which dates to 1907.

“Since the departure of the old pastor, there are a number of cultural and community events that SFDS is looking to relaunch,” writes SFDS sexton Michael Nevadomski. “Most of them are pretty Catholic, but we’re looking to start doing more regular concerts, the first of which is a candlelight Christmas concert by our very talented choir and organist on December 14.”  Continue Reading

Jean-Marie Straub & Daniele Huillet, Selected Work: Eyes Do Not Want To Close… (Othon)

Posted on July 15, 2016 9:00 pm by IHP

Dir. Jean-Marie Straub & Daniele Huillet, Italy/France, 1970, DCP, 88 min., French w/ English subtitles

The cinematographer Renato Berta, a frequent collaborator of Straub and Huillet, presents the first film that the partners shot together in Italy (on the Palatine Hill of Rome), which was also the first they made in color. A faithful adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s Othon, the classic tragedy that premiered at the court of Louis XIV at Fontainebleau in 1664 and today is more hallowed than actually performed, Eyes Do Not Want to Close… depicts the power vacuum that followed Emperor Nero’s death. Against a crowd of obsequious and scheming pretenders to the throne, Corneille has Camille as his epic heroine, the mother of all conscientious objectors.

Othon juxtaposes the irreconcilable requirements of a drive for power with the urgencies of tragic love… By placing their film in ancient settings (the Palatine Hill, and later, the Villa Doria Pamphili) that are however surrounded by the sights and sounds of contemporary Rome (traffic is the background noise for the earlier parts of Othon; an unnaturally loud fountain for the later parts) Straub and Huillet have included themselves in the historical time scheme of considerable, multi-layered complexity – including, of course, 17th-century France (and the Rome of 17th-century France) as well as the ancient and modern worlds. Straub himself plays the role of Lacus.]

theVillageNBW6Many of you have heard about Neighborhood Bike Works, the West Philly non-profit that offers bike education programs to local youth. The organization recently partnered with theVillage’s foster care program to present 20 new bikes to local foster children (the bikes were donated by AmerisourceBergen).

NBW youth leaders also conducted a workshop with the group of children, ages 6 – 12 years, to teach them about bike safety, personal safety and basic rules of the road through a “Safety Rodeo” obstacle course. Each child left the workshop with a bicycle, helmet, bike lock, and the necessary safety skills to experience the joys of cycling– something they might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience as they transition through the foster care system on their path to find their “forever home.”  Continue Reading
