How do many small and medium-sized Asian markets outperform mainstream big-box grocery chains in their vegetable offerings and cost value? Can these stores survive the challenges that come with pandemic lockdowns? Ahead of Lunar New Year celebrations\, whet your appetite for the diverse food resources available through area Asian markets. Join David Dettmann\, Associate Director of Penn&#8217\;s Center for East Asian Studies\, as he explores local grocery stores and searches for specialized ingredients.  David seeks to recreate great food experiences from his years living and traveling in Asia. He documents his food explorations through the blog Asian Markets of Philadelphia\, which highlights our region’s alternative food networks built by Asian immigrant communities. As foods like miso\, kimchi\, and fish sauce become commonplace in U.S. kitchens\, David will highlight some of his own pantry staples that you might consider purchasing at local Asian markets. David Dettmann earned his M.A. in 2009 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the field of Central Asian Studies and has since worked in higher education as an administrator\, outreach coordinator\, teacher\, and educational liaison focusing on themes relating to East\, Central\, and Inner Asia. From 2009 to 2013\, David worked as Assistant Director at the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) at University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where he taught courses focused on cultures of China’s borderlands. Since 2015\, David has coordinated educational outreach and professional development programs relating to East and Inner Asia from the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, including the annual National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) East Asia seminar\, and two National Endowment for the Humanities-funded Summer Institutes in 2016 and 2018 on Mongolia. David takes great pleasure in studying the languages\, music\, and foodways of Asia. David is also a Program Manager and Consultant for the American Center for Mongolian Studies in Ulaanbaatar.
