Halloween is less than a month away and the Woodlands Cemetery and Mansion (40th and Woodland) is once again presenting a series of fun and spooky events for kids and adults alike. Also, Bindlestiff Books (4530 Baltimore Ave.) is accepting donations of children’s books for All Hallow’s Read: a spooky book swap that will be held at the Woodlands on Sunday, Oct. 25, from Noon to 4.

The local synagogue Kol Tzedek, located at Calvary Center for Culture and Community, 48th and Baltimore, is inviting community members to its upcoming holiday services and events. Rosh Hashanah services will be held on Sept. 13, 14 and 15. Events will include children’s programming, potluck lunch at the chapel and a picnic at Bartram’s Garden.

Yom Kippur services and events will take place on Sept. 22 and 23.

There is no cost, although donations are welcome. Services are open to the whole community – it is not necessary to know Hebrew or be a practicing Jew. Online registration in advance is preferred and can be done on the website: kol-tzedek.org. Childcare is offered from 10 a.m. to the close of daytime services (except on Sept. 15) and in the evening of Sept. 22 and the entire day of Sept. 23.

We hope you’re enjoying the last days of summer. Here’s some information on what’s closed today, and schedule changes for some city services and SEPTA. Happy Labor Day!

• All government offices and public libraries are closed today

• Post offices are closed, and there’s no mail delivery

• SEPTA is operating on a Sunday schedule

• No trash/recycling pick-up today. Set out your Monday’s trash on Tuesday, Sept. 8. There will be one-day trash pick-up delay for the rest of the week. Sanitation Convenience centers are also closed today.

A good way to get down to what Memorial Day is really about is to take a quiet stroll through The Woodlands today. Over the weekend flags were placed at the dozens and dozens of soldiers’ gravestones, some of which date back to the Revolutionary War (Photo by West Philly Local).

Carr Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony at Bartram’s Garden, 54th and Lindbergh

The groundbreaking for the Carr Garden restoration starts at 3:30 p.m. This free event marks the beginning of an exciting landscape renovation project on the western façade of the John Bartram House, recreating the Ann Bartram Carr and her husband Robert’s exotic plantings of the early 19th-century. “Noises Off” Opening Night at Curio Theatre, 48th and Baltimore

Curio Theatre Company wants folks to dress up in the 80’s style for the opening night of their new show, farcical comedy “Noises Off.” And those who do have a chance to win two passes for next season. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets ($15-$25) are available here.

Spruce Hill May Fair at Clark Park, 43rd and Chester

The annual Spruce Hill May Fair will be held for the 57th time with some new activities added for children this year. This Saturday kids can enjoy pony rides and a petting zoo (both 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.) in addition to the bounce tent and 40-foot-long obstacle course. The fair, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine, will also include a raffle with great prizes from neighborhood businesses (read more about them here), music performances, book and plant sales, and dozens of local vendors and food trucks. Spring Plant Sale at Bartram’s Garden

Bartram’s Garden Spring Plant will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expert horticulturists will be on hand on both days for consultations and advice. Two egg hunts will be held behind the library: 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Spring Egg Hunt for preschoolers. 1-2:30 p.m. – Spring Egg Hunt for kids ages 6 and up. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Walnut St West Library.

Easter Egg Hunt at Clark Park (43rd and Chester)

Renewal Presbyterian Church is having its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Clark Park (next to the toddler playground) on Saturday, April 4. Families, friends and all neighbors are invited to join them for an egg hunt, crafts, and fun in the park! The egg hunt is for children ages 1-8 (please sign up at the beginning of the event). There will also be a raffle basket giveaway from local West Philly venues.
