Free COVID-19 testing through Monday with CATE mobile testing unit

Pennsylvania’s Community-Accessible Testing & Education initiative’s mobile testing unit, CATE, will be making stops in Philadelphia for the next three days. Adults and children needing COVID-19 tests can receive one at no-cost thanks to a partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Philadelphia Fight.

CATE’s tour schedule includes the following stops in West Philly:

• Saturday, Nov. 21, 9am-12pm, Vine Memorial Baptist Church, 5600 W. Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19131

• Saturday, Nov. 21, 2pm-6pm, Woodland Rec Center, 1414 S 47th Street, Philadelphia PA 19143

Philadelphia announces new COVID-19 restrictions through January 1, 2021

Philadelphia officials have announced new restrictions in response to increasing COVID-19 cases in the city. The restrictions, which will be effective from Friday, Nov. 20 through January 1, 2021, will affect businesses, events and gatherings and other activities.

City officials to announce new restrictions on Monday as COVID-19 cases keep growing

Philadelphia officials announced today that there were 1,158 new COVID-19 cases in the city, bringing the total reported cases to 52,043 since the pandemic began. Due to a continuous increase in the number of new cases over the past few weeks and to help stop the spread of the virus, city officials have devised new COVID-19 restrictions. The announcement is expected to be made on Monday, Nov. 16, according to Mayor Jim Kenney:

COVID-19 cases spike in Philadelphia; Where to get tested in West Philly

The number of new COVID-19 cases has been increasing in the Philadelphia region in recent weeks, with daily numbers topping 800 cases, which is higher than in the spring. As of Wednesday, 50,536 total cases were reported in the city and 1,904 total deaths.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health reminds residents to keep wearing masks, practice social distancing, stay home as much as possible, and wash hands with soap and water. It is also very important to keep an eye out for symptoms and get tested if you experience COVID-19 symptoms (persistent cough, fever, shortness of breath, or loss of the sense of smell or taste) or have been exposed to someone with the infection.  Continue Reading

Donate blood, plasma + COVID-19 antibodies testing at Calvary Center this Friday

St. Francis De Sales Church and Calvary Center are hosting a Red Cross blood drive on Friday, Sept. 25. For a limited time, the Red Cross will test all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies as an additional health service to donors. There is currently a shortage of “COVID-19 convalescent” plasma needed to treat sick people, so the Red Cross is also seeking fully recovered COVID-19 patients.

The blood drive will be held at Calvary Center for Culture and Community (801 S. 48th St.) from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Spruce Hill Community Association hosting Zoom Q&A with Philadelphia Health Department (updated)

The Spruce Hill Community Association (SHCA) is hosting a COVID-19 Zoom Q&A with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. Dr. Cheryl Bettigole, the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Director and COVID-19 Guidance Lead, will present and answer questions.
