City Council passes ban on “single-use” plastic bags

The City Council on Thursday passed a bill banning “single-use” plastic bags in the city.

The ban means that places like supermarkets, convenience stores, gas stations, take-out restaurants, farmer’s markets and even food trucks will have to either switch to paper bags or offer their customers an option to buy a reusable bag. A similar ban already exists in other cities, like New York.

If signed into law by Mayor Jim Kenney, the ban would go into effect on July 2, 2020.  Continue Reading

Funeral of Monsignor Joseph Anderlonis, Pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, scheduled for this Saturday

The funeral of Monsignor Joseph J. Anderlonis, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, who passed away on Friday, Dec. 6 after a short illness, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. A viewing will take place in the church, at 47th and Springfield Ave., from 9-11 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow in the parish hall. All are welcome.

Anderlonis, 75, was appointed to his position as pastor of St. Francis de Sales in June 2016. Prior to that, he served for many years (from 1982 to 2016) as Pastor at St. George in Philadelphia.  Continue Reading

Construction underway on new Powel Elementary, Science Leadership Academy Middle School building in Powelton

Drexel University and the School District of Philadelphia officials broke ground today on a new facility that will house two public schools. The School District will lease the building from Drexel and the facility will house the Powel Elementary School (K-4), currently at 36th Street and Powelton Avenue, and the Science Leadership Academy Middle School (SLAMS), which opened in 2016 at Drexel’s Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships and recently moved into space at 3600 Market Street.  Continue Reading

Big Winter Book Sale this Friday & Saturday at Walnut St. West Library

Community members are invited to a Big Winter Book Sale at Walnut Street West Library, happening this weekend. Come to the library, located on the Southeast corner of 40th and Walnut Streets, on Friday, Dec. 6 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. or Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and shop for pre-owned quality books, culled from the best donations to the Friends of Walnut St. West Library this year.

Books are priced from $0.50 to $5, but most are $1 and $2, featuring fiction and nonfiction, lots of history and classics, coffee-table and art books, cookbooks, children’s books, how-to and much more.  Continue Reading

Renata’s Kitchen to take over former Trolley Car Station space at 40th and Baltimore

Renata’s Kitchen is expanding into the two-story restaurant space at 3940 Baltimore Avenue (former Trolley Car Station restaurant location).

The two-story restaurant space at 40th Street Trolley Portal Gardens, formerly occupied by the Trolley Car Station restaurant, is finally getting a new tenant. Well-known West Philly restaurateur couple, Katie and Yasser Aiq, the owners of the popular cafe and brunch spot Renata’s Kitchen on Baltimore Ave., have signed the lease for the space and expect to open this winter (“in the next month or so”), with immediate plans to serve breakfast and lunch seven days a week.

The restaurant, which offers a mixed menu of Mediterranean and American dishes, is not only expanding into a bigger, 125-seat space at 3940 Baltimore Ave., the owners are also planning to eventually launch dinner service, as well as an “inventive drink” menu when they secure the liquor license that comes with the space.  Continue Reading
