Theatre in the X brings “For Colored Girls…” to Malcolm X Park this week

West Philadelphia’s own Theatre in the X returns to Malcolm X Park (5100 Pine St) this week with Ntozake Shange’s landmark, Obie Award–winning choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf.

Directed by Cheyenne Barboza, the performance celebrates the 50th anniversary of Shange’s groundbreaking work, which explores stories of womanhood, survival, passion, and empowerment through poetry, dance, and music.

The cast features Courtney Lyneé (Blue), M. Anastasia Robinson (Purple), LaNeshe Miller-White (Brown), Rahnda Rize (Red), Sabrina Winford (Yellow), CaSandra Kay (Orange), and Francine Emefa Tamakloe (Green).

Performances will run Thursday, Aug. 20 & Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 22 & Sunday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m.

With this performance, Theatre in the X is continuing its decade-long tradition of bringing accessible theater directly to the community. Since 2013, the Black theater company has operated on a vital mission: to eliminate location and cost barriers by delivering professional quality live drama to the community at no charge. By claiming public green space as a cultural stage, the organization ensures local artists and neighborhood audiences can connect through powerful stories that reflect and inspire the community.

Audience members are encouraged to arrive early to set up their chairs and connect with neighbors.
