Firefighters responded to two serious fires in West Philadelphia that occurred overnight within half a mile distance from one another.

One fire was reported around 3 a.m. in a building located near 52nd and Delancey. No injuries were reported.

The second was a house fire at 50th and Hazel that was reported around 4 a.m. A woman was taken to the hospital, according to reports, but her condition is currently unknown.

Temperatures fell to 11 degrees overnight and firefighters had to deal with tough conditions, including ice quickly forming while they were putting out the fires.

Firefighters were still at 52nd and Delancey/52nd and Pine putting out the fire as of 9 a.m. on Saturday. The water was running down these streets and quickly freezing this morning, which created dangerous icy conditions. Please avoid these areas.

UPDATE: The fire was placed under control by 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Two-story buildings near 52nd and Delancey and the four-story apartment building located at 5145 Pine St. were heavily damaged in the fire (see photos below).

Red Cross disaster workers provided emergency support to residents affected by the fires. Eight people were displaced after the fire at 50th and Hazel and 20 people after the fire at 52nd and Delancey/Pine.

UPDATE (1/27/2026): Pine street near 52nd is still closed to vehicular traffic.
