A West Philadelphia Community Rally and Strike took place this afternoon in solidarity with the nationwide general strike. West Philly residents, adults and children alike, and many business owners gathered at noon in Clark Park to protest the current administration and to celebrate the diversity in the city.

Some photos from the rally and from around the neighborhood are below, courtesy of Hanbit’s Contemplative Imaging. For more photos, go to Hanbit’s Facebook page.

Spruce Hill Halloween Parade photos

Posted on 01 November 2016 by Mike Lyons

Lots of little ghouls and goblins were on the prowl last night for the annual Spruce Hill Halloween Parade. Donald Trump was also there (no doubt to make sure there was no fraudulent trick-or-treating) for the party on Little Osage Ave.

Here are some more photos and a video.

Shakespeare in Clark Park opens

Posted on 28 July 2016 by Mike Lyons

Shakespeare in Clark Park opened last night in front of its customary large crowd. This year the performance, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, is being staged on the south end of the bowl and includes window frames and chandeliers hanging in the trees, a high-spirited cast and lively jazz sextet.

Performances are every night through Sunday, July 31 beginning at 7 p.m. If it rains, the whole thing moves to University of the Sciences (Main Dining Hall, 600 S. 43rd St.).

Posted on 03 April 2016 by

Dangerous winds are blowing in the area this morning. A fairly large tree branch snapped and fell near 43rd and Osage, blocking the road, according to neighbor reports. There have been other reports of toppled trees around the city and in the region.

The high wind warning is in effect until noon. (Photos by Eva Jacobs and Abby Thaker).

Large tree falls down, damages cars on 4500 block of Regent

Posted on 26 February 2016 by

Yesterday’s high winds battered many of the large trees around the area. Here’s what happened on the 4500 block of Regent Street across from Clark Park, according to reader Frank Innes:

Around 7:15 last night a horse chestnut tree, on the south sidewalk in the middle of the 4500 block of Regent Street, came down and damaged several cars and snapped a wood light pole in half. The street, which is just west of the shed building in Clark Park, was completely blocked (see photo below).

Around 9:15 this morning a Philadelphia Parks and Recreation tree removal crew arrived with a heavy-duty chipper and a flat bed truck, among other vehicles, to remove the tree. This task was accomplished in about an hour by the expert crew.
