Local bookstore holding “giant” outdoor book sale this weekend

Here’s a great chance to support a local independent bookstore and buy books at bargain prices. The Baltimore Avenue bookstore, Bindlestiff Books, is holding a “giant” sidewalk book sale this weekend. There will be hundreds of overstock titles for kids and adults alike, priced as low as $1. New titles will be added each day to replace those that have sold.

The sale will take place Friday, July 30 through Sunday, Aug. 1, Noon – 6 p.m. (weather permitting).

Big Winter Book Sale this Friday & Saturday at Walnut St. West Library

Community members are invited to a Big Winter Book Sale at Walnut Street West Library, happening this weekend. Come to the library, located on the Southeast corner of 40th and Walnut Streets, on Friday, Dec. 6 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. or Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and shop for pre-owned quality books, culled from the best donations to the Friends of Walnut St. West Library this year.

Books are priced from $0.50 to $5, but most are $1 and $2, featuring fiction and nonfiction, lots of history and classics, coffee-table and art books, cookbooks, children’s books, how-to and much more.  Continue Reading

Vendors, music & dancing, raffle, petting zoo and more at this year’s Spruce Hill May Fair

This week has been rainy and gloomy in Philadelphia, but sunny weather is in the forecast for Saturday (May 7), just in time for the Spruce Hill May Fair, the annual community celebration.

May FairThe fair will take place from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. at Clark Park (43rd and Chester) and will feature attractions for everyone. For children, the fair will once again have a petting zoo, pony rides, a bounce tent and a 40-foot obstacle course, all at family-friendly prices.

Book lovers will find one of the best assortments of $1 used books the fair has ever offered, and raffle players can shoot for an Apple watch offered by University Family Fun Center. Drawings will be held throughout the day for many gift certificates for dinner and services from local merchants, including Aksum, Renata’s Kitchen, Dock Street Brewery, Philly Homebrew Outlet, Dottie’s Donuts, City Food Tours, Pattaya Grill, VIX Emporium, Jinxed, Baltimore Pet Shoppe, Keswick Cycle, Studio 34 and many more!

Saturday, Oct. 24

Give Kids Sight Day – Free eye care and eyeglasses at Give Kids Sight Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Medical College Alumni Hall, 1020 Locust St. No appointments or insurance is necessary.

• A free document-shredding event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at State Rep. James Roebuck’s district office, 4712 Baltimore Ave.

• Spruce Hill Community Association is hosting a Fall Book Sale and Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their office (257 S 45th St.).

• From The Robeson House to Clark Park: the 16th annual Peoplehood Parade will kick off at 1 p.m.

• Catch Curio Theatre’s new show “The Handmaid’s Tale” on the main stage (48th and Baltimore), 8 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 25

• Join your neighbors for Halloween Family Fun Day at The Woodlands (40th and Woodland), 12 – 4 p.m.

• Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra presents music from 5,000 years of civilization at Kimmel Center (300 S Broad St.), 2 p.m.

• A Classical Arab Music and Poetry concert by Al-Bustan Takht Ensemble, with poetry reading by Ahmad Almallah, Trinity Center for Urban Life (22nd and Spruce), 4 p.m.

Walnut West Library’s Big Holiday Book Sale

Don’t miss the Big Holiday Book Sale at the Walnut West Library (201 S 40th St.) this Saturday, Dec. 3. All books are in excellent, gift-giving condition. There will be a great selection of cookbooks, children’s books, quality non-fiction and coffee-table books. The sale will be held in the library’s community room from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
