Shape Up the Shop & Volunteer Bike Build

Posted on January 7, 2017 2:00 pm by Neighborhood Bike Works

SHAPE UP THE SHOP 2-4pm

We’ll be spending two hours from 2-4pm to organize NBW’s heavily used shop space at 3939 Lancaster Ave. Will you help us? Volunteers will be stripping donated bikes and sorting used parts, restocking Bike Church and Earn-A-Bike parts bins, processing bike donations, and more. Your support is crucial to keeping NBW’s youth and adult programs running smoothly!

VOLUNTEER BIKE BUILD 4-6pm

Immediately following Shape Up the Shop, from 4-6pm, we’ll be having an additional work party to help prep some bikes for reburbishment to be given away to recent refugee arrivals in Philly or other folks in need. The bikes won’t need to be completed (NBW staff and/or youth will take care of that), just assessed and tagged, cleaned, and prepped, so minimal mechanical experience is OK. Guidance provided, and taking apart bikes is a great way to start learning about ’em!

C’mon out!

Two people hospitalized after manhole fire near 49th and Windsor (updated)

Posted on 14 December 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

A fire broke out early Wednesday afternoon underground, reportedly after a gas leak, near 49th and Windsor and caused evacuations of nearby homes, according to neighbor and media reports. The fire was seen coming out of a manhole and reaching as high as six feet. Firefighters responded to the scene, and shuttle buses replaced trolleys due to the fire.

UPDATE: Two SEPTA workers were hospitalized with 1st and 2nd degree burns following the fire, according to reports.

SEPTA and PGW were doing some work in the area this morning, according to neighbor reports, but it’s not clear whether the fire was caused by this. The Philadelphia Fire Department is investigating the cause of the gas leak.

Groundbreaking for 40th Street trolley portal remodel, including restaurant, next week

Portal 2

An artist’s rendering of the Trolley Car Station restaurant from plans presented last spring to the Spruce Hill Community Association zoning committee.

Developers will soon break ground on a project that should transform the barren patch of concrete at the 40th Street trolley terminal into a landscaped public space complete with a 125-seat restaurant.

University City District officials promise it will be a more navigable public space for pedestrians. Complete with moveable tables and chairs, enough racks to accommodate 48 bikes and “vegetation everywhere,” the project was well received during public meetings and breezed through zoning approval last spring.

The centerpiece of the project will be the Trolley Car Station restaurant, a two-story restaurant that will be built in the grassy area bordering the portal along Baltimore Avenue. A company owned by real estate developer Ken Weinstein, which runs the Trolley Car Diner in Mount Airy, will operate the restaurant.  Continue Reading

Teen carjackers slam into cars near 48th and Springfield

Posted on 26 July 2016 by WestPhillyLocal.com

hitandrun

A stolen car with two armed teenagers inside crashed into several parked cars near 48th and Springfield overnight, according to reports. Police say the teens stole the car in South Philadelphia shortly after midnight and drove around in it for a while before they slammed into cars parked along the 4800 block of Springfield Avenue. Police spotted the car earlier in Southwest Philly but decided not to pursue it because they deemed it too dangerous.

“We believe these kids probably don’t have a license to drive,” Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detectives Division told NBC News.

After running into the parked cars, the teens fled on foot. One of them reportedly has a head injury. No one else was hurt, according to police. Police found two guns in the stolen vehicle.

University City District (UCD) is planning to install more bike racks in the area and needs help identifying places that need bike parking or additional bike racks.

Currently, UCD is accepting photos showing overcrowded or out-of-repair bike parking or bikes locked to trees, railings, etc. along commercial corridors and at other neighborhood destinations in University City.

You can share these photos on Twitter using #UCbikeparking or email them to: bikeparking@universitycity.org. Please include the date, time, and location. This information will be used to help select future bike rack locations.
