The 16th annual Peoplehood Parade, organized by Spiral Q, is happening this Saturday (Oct 24). This year’s parade will pay tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement and honor the life of Fran Aulston, a community leader and former Paul Robeson House president, who passed away on August 9, 2015. People of all ages are invited to join Spiral Q artists and their puppets on Saturday and march, walk or roll through West Philly streets together (wheelchairs, bicycles and strollers are welcome).

The parade, which will span a 1.25 mile route, will feature Spiral Q’s signature giant puppets, stilt-walkers, a drum line, and the artwork of fine artist Vitus Shell, a Monroe, LA native.

The parade starts at 1 p.m. at the Paul Robeson House (4951 Walnut St)  and then moves into Clark Park (45th and Chester), where it will be followed by a participatory group art-making activity starting around 2 p.m. in the Bowl. Visit the Spiral Q website for more details.

Updates on bike thefts and other crime, including 14-year-old arrested for string of Powelton robberies

Posted on 05 October 2015 by WestPhillyLocal.com

This is a follow up to some of the crime reports we published in the last two weeks and a report of a recent arrest in connection with multiple robberies in Powelton.

Shootings on 5200 block of Irving

So far no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting incidents on the 5200 block of Irving St. that left two men seriously wounded. Police said that they have persons of interest but can’t arrest them because there are no witnesses, and the victims are not cooperating.

Gunpoint robberies on S. 50th Street

Police arrested two young men, both West Philly residents, in South Philadelphia on Thursday for a robbery similar to the robberies on S. 50th Street on Sept. 23. Another arrest was made earlier, and all the detained suspects are being looked at in relation to the robberies. In addition, the 18 Police District has assigned plainclothes and uniform cops to the area, which should “help slow things down” and already has, according to police.  Continue Reading

Keep your eyes on the road: Bike share in the city starts tomorrow

Posted on 22 April 2015 by Mike Lyons

Bike stationAfter many years of wishful thinking, high hopes and false starts, bike-share bicycles will be unleashed on the streets of Philadelphia tomorrow.

The bike share service Indego officially kicks off with a “ride off” beginning at Eakins Oval tomorrow morning to launch the service. Tickets for those inaugural rides are sold out. But you can get a bike and do your own ride off tomorrow if you like.

An important note for folks around here, though – the stations planned for Clark Park, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, 44th and Walnut near the Supremo Shop ‘n Bag and Mantua Haverford Community Center (39th and Mt. Vernon) are still listed as “coming soon” or “unavailable” rather than “active” on the map of stations around the city.

That leaves eight stations in West Philly open for business tomorrow. See the map here.

30th Street station development plan gets community feedback, new ideas

Posted on 15 April 2015 by WestPhillyLocal.com

AMTRAK AND PARTNERS HOST OPEN HOUSE ON PHILADELPHIA 30TH STREET STATION DISTRICT PLAN

30th Street Station District Plan open house (Photo via from www.phillydistrict30.com)

As we reported earlier this year, the stakeholders behind the 30th Street Station District Plan are seeking feedback from the community and interested parties on the project through a series of public open houses and via the District Plan’s website.

The results of a project survey completed between January 28 and February 27 have just been announced. Some 339 people completed the survey distributed at the open house or online. Participants answered the questions about their experiences at the station and in the surrounding area, and their future expectations. Also, they submitted hundreds of ideas about improvements to the station, transportation network and the neighborhood, which the project team will analyse.

Here are some of the ideas that the project team will be considering.  Continue Reading

Buy Local for the Holidays

Posted on 26 November 2014 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Whenever possible, I like to purchase the things I need at locally-owned shops. And certainly, from croissants to crescent wrenches, beer to books, we’ve got businesses right here in West Philly where we can buy the things we need.”

– Michael Froehlich, President of Cedar Park Neighbors & Co-founder of the
West Philly Tool Library

“Shopping local is a way to keep more of your dollars in your own community, rather than add more strength to giant multinational companies. Dollars spent at a “mom and pop” directly support a local family, who then support other local businesses… Shopping local is a vote for individualism, creativity, sustainability and independence.”

– Emily Dorn, owner of VIX Emporium

“Shopping locally for the holidays means you can find something truly unique for everyone on your list – while supporting your local community.

– Annie Baum-Stein, Milk and Honey Market

West Philly Local encourages residents to support local businesses by doing as much of their holiday shopping as possible in their neighborhood. You can buy gifts, locally produced food items, dine/book a holiday party or pamper yourself or loved ones for the holidays at a bunch of West Philly businesses. By shopping locally you keep your money where you live.

West Philly Local is also a local business and this campaign is part of our effort to help other local businesses thrive. But we are a very small part of this. You have the power to make your neighborhood a great place to live.

Our campaign partners share our commitment to sustainable neighborhood businesses. Check out their holiday messages below and please consider shopping local this holiday season.
