Mike- Awe man, sorry to hear you felt like that. I've had similar experiences elsewhere and it doesn't feel good. But as an industry person I have to back up my friends over at the 44. Running a bar, the legal rigmarole is considerable and the consequences of error are daunting. You just gotta do what PLBC says and do it how they say to do it. As for people experiencing surly or poor service, I will stand for the staff again. You never know what your server's life is like at that moment so try to be understanding. Every server has a freakish bad moment now and then. Don't take these things personally. The 44 staff is phenomenal. Go back soon. They'll do you right.

I too will chime in.

For the most part Local 44 is pretty great. The bottle shop is top notch too. However (yes, there is a however), sometimes the servers act as if they are well aware that they are currently the only option… The carding thing is getting old. Law or not, if you're a local (meaning you regularly come into the shop/ bar) you don't need to be carded every time. Additionally, if I'm not drinking, don't ask me for my card. I'm hungry and I just want some of your sticky wings. Hell, I don't even need to take up any precious dining room space (seriously, they treat the dining room like its a limited run art show in Chelsea).

Anyways, I rant… The servers are in fact mostly nice… except when they aren't. I know we can't all be stellar every day, but face it. You're in service. You live off the tips you earn. When I have a bad day, I leave it at the door. Put on a smile and go make your day better by earning more tips. Not by being surly and rude. I get it, you're having a shitty day, but when I'm sitting down for a beer and burger I don't really need to deal with your day. I'm currently dealing with my own.

Is customer service dead? I think not. We just have to keep demanding it. I can live with that.

anyway, there is way more positive than negative going on at Local 44. To the OP, don't take it personally. Just hold them accountable. Make your gripes known to the manager on duty. If he/she can't work it out, than at least you've done your due diligence.

And don't forget! PENN kids are nearly gone! We get the "Local" part of Local 44 back! That means more seating, and better service for all!Laugh

Never had a service problem at 44. I also don't have an issue getting carded. You pull out your wallet and flash an ID. It's not like you have to give them a blood sample. You don't go to a store without money handy, you don't go to a bar without ID. What's the big deal?

I've never had a problem at Local 44. It's a breath of fresh air for West Philly. Great, interesting food, fantastic beer selection. The service is good, because the people there know you and treat you well.
