Deliveries stolen from porch?

Hi neighbors,

So for the second time I appear to have had a UPS box stolen from my porch within a couple hours of it being delivered.

Is this a common/known problem around here? Has anyone figured out solutions other than buying local (duh) or getting things shipped to work or another address?

I'm curious if this is a larger pattern and hoping there's a way I can still buy certain items without having to drive to the suburbs to find them in person. Oh West Philly…

Hi Sarah,

What block are you on? Did you report the theft to police? There've been other package theft reports this week.

I reported one on Catharine last spring with no result. Police literally shrugged their shoulders. Haven't reported this one yet – on Farragut. I'm happy to but was also wondering if there's a more home-grown solution if PPD doesn't have time to put into petty/non-violent crime.

I did discover that UPS has some tools to schedule deliveries, text on arrival, etc. Also learned that multiple claims for lost packages can get you triggered as suspicious by UPS and FedEx and prevent you from receiving further home deliveries.

You could always make sure to ask for the sender to require a signature for delivery. That way, if you aren't home, UPS or FedEx will hold your package instead of leaving it on the porch. FedEx is especially nice since the depot is right over on Grays Ferry.

in a place so dense with people and pedestrians and houses set close to the street, I think package-stealing is inevitable. I currently get everything delivered elsewhere but in my old apartment we kept a sofa on the porch which delivery people tucked packages behind, and that had a pretty good success rate. just like avoiding bicycle theft, it's about not being the lowest-hanging fruit.

The couch is a good suggestion. I did have one stolen with signature, since FedEx can apparently take the signature of people other than the name on the package. All about not being the lowest hanging fruit!

Hope everyone is safe and dry tonight.

Hi,
There's a FedEx on 39th and Market where you can have your deliveries held for pick-up. Similarly for UPS, there's a location on 37th and Market and I think there's one downtown that also has that option. I have never tried the UPS one but I have had packages delivered to the FedEx on 39th Street. Check their website or give them both a call for details
