This year, the concerts, which cost only $5 and also include admission to the museum galleries, will run through mid-September and feature a colorful blend of global music performances – from gentle Latin folk to raucous Turkish fusion, to rhythmic Afro-Cuban jazz. American-influenced music will be also well represented, with bluegrass, swing, and good, old-fashioned rock n’ roll performances. See the full line-up here and check out the Events Calendar for upcoming concerts.

The P.M. @ Penn Museum series is specifically aimed at those who want to unwind after a long day at work. This summer the museum’s outdoor Stoner Courtyard will offer a relaxed outdoor locale for the concerts and the Pepper Mill Cafe’s garden bar will serve drinks and light fare. Please note that in case of rain concerts move inside.

This Wednesday, Bill Koutsouros’ internationally acclaimed ensemble, Animus, kicks off the series, offering an exciting fusion of ancient and modern music with traditional elements of Greek, rock, Middle Eastern, blues, Indian, jazz, and African music. On June 26, P.M. @ Penn Museum is hosting Philadelphia-based, multi-ethnic group Barakka, which specializes in Turkish folk-rock with a mix of eastern and western instrumentation.

The development team for the 92-unit residential development project at 4224 Baltimore Ave has scheduled a second community meeting for Tuesday, June 18, at International House (37th and Chestnut), in the South American Room (2nd floor), from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The proposed design plan has drawn criticism from the community and the project developers are seeking residents’ input to help work out alternative designs. About 40 residents attended the first community meeting last month where they were broken into groups to discuss such issues as building design, retail spaces, unit types, and parking/transit.

At tomorrow’s meeting, the team will be presenting two or three design schemes for discussion and comment, according to an email message by Barry Grossbach, chair of the Spruce Hill Zoning Committee. “Undoubtedly, what comes out of this meeting will play a major role in shaping any final submission,” the message reads.

We’ll let you know about the third and final community meeting on this project as soon as we obtain more information.

Tom Corbett and state Republicans for education budget cuts that have disproportionately hurt poorer school districts. In A Word from the Cripples, which she gave us permission to reprint below, Beckman, a graduate of Penn Alexander and a Masterman ninth grader, speaks for the city’s public school students, the ones most impacted by the cuts.

The poem has received national attention – for good reason.

A Word from the Cripples

I’ve got something
to say.
It won’t take long
Just as long as it took you
to snatch everything away
One fourth of the body is
the leg
You have crippled us
Cursing us to hobble
all of our lives.

You see us as a problem
the classic class problem
INNER CITY streaked like mud across our faces
they’re all on the street anyway.

Thrusting fear
into our hearts
Why make us feel
so small
helpless
Forgotten by the people
whose duty it is to remember

Turn your back on your city
that chose not to choose
you
Because they feared
and now do all fears dawn true.

We will show ourselves to be
as formidable a foe
as all of those frackers
who you refuse to tax.

Dismiss us
We cannot vote.
But in this country
we can speak.

As you may know, a new version of Rx will return this summer when new owners and chefs Ross Scofield and Danielle Coulter reopen the restaurant at 4443 Spruce Street in mid-July.

Under the new moniker Rx The Farmacy, the culinary couple and The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College graduates will revamp the once-busy corner BYOB that closed in 2011 into a home-style farm-to-table eatery. Their brunch, lunch and dinner menus will feature a smorgasbord of fresh ingredients tapped from Pennsylvania and New Jersey farm networks, and sausage and bacon made in-house. They’ll also steer away from GMO-saturated products, opting for peanut oil instead of the much-maligned corn and canola oils.

In other words: box pasta and frozen fish need not apply.

Don’t expect the “farm-to-table” catchphrase to monopolize Rx The Farmacy’s attention, though. It’s more of a lifestyle than an attraction—a hushed marriage between local, healthy, sustainable food and the laid-back dining experience. But if you consider Scofield’s childhood in Woodstown, New Jersey, this inconspicuous approach makes sense. After all, growing up in South Jersey’s farming community meant harvesting fresh vegetables right in his Greek family’s own backyard and using them in every meal.

“We’re not stuffing it in your face. It’s just smart food,” said Scofield, who leased the space on impulse three weeks ago after a chance—even cosmic—visit to their old neighborhood. “Yea, we’re doing farm-to-table but this is not fine dining. It’s casual.”

The “fine dining” label is likely why the previous tenant, Rimedio, failed, the 31-year-old former Culinary Institute of America student theorized. In Scofield’s eyes, the Italian restaurant that opened briefly in Rx’s space in 2012 was far removed from West Philly’s character.

Pushing the point, Scofield assured they won’t “bring in something that’s not West Philly”— no fine dining or molecular gastronomy, even if they have the knowledge to do so. Instead, they’re appealing to the community’s permanent bohemian charm by stripping the space of Rimedio’s complex fine-dining past. The bill of fare will be simple and humble, the tables will be varnished and bare, and the four walls will receive splashes of bright orange, greens, and yellows. Plants and herb gardens will also thrive at Rx The Farmacy, both indoors and out.

For what works in the ‘hood, the self-described “passive” chef points to Honest Tom’s off of 44th and Spruce Streets. The duo admitted to eating at the relished taco hole-in-the-wall at least seven times since acquiring Rx’s keys over a week ago. They described it as an “awesome place” where you “could wear whatever you want, sit down, get ridiculously good food and you leave.”

“We were sitting there for 15 minutes, and I bet you the guy did $300 worth of business in 15 minutes, and that’s because it’s not some stuffy, pretentious thing. It’s about good food,” Scofield told West Philly Local.

Rx The Farmacy will operate much in the same way— informal attire, excellent fare, pompous attitude checked at the door. More importantly, though, the menu will also offer wholesome food at affordable price points — a necessary consideration for an emerging neighborhood of mixed incomes and mixed philosophies.

Both Coulter and Scofield understand this first-hand. During their stints at the Restaurant School a couple of years ago, the pair, who lived on 50th and Spruce Streets, sometimes had little money to eat out. With that tight of a budget, their only food options were greasy joints not conducive to healthy living.

The couple now lives in Swarthmore after moving back in January from Connecticut, where they helped launch friend Chef Colin Sepko’s American restaurant, The Commoner. They plan to return to West Philly “soon.”

Hinged on fresh fixings, Rx The Farmacy’s menu will offer sandwiches, a burger, salads, a mostly-vegetarian soup of the day, desserts, and vegetarian carte du jour. Particularly, guests can expect a charcuterie board, cheese board, fried pickles, hummus, lobster and truffle mac & cheese, a half chicken entrée, chicken confit, steak frites, pomme frites topped with egg, paleo sweet potato pancakes, and a fried chicken on a biscuit with sausage gravy and a fried egg. Servers will also be trained to know everything that goes into the menu, and whether an item will spark an allergy, said Scofield.

“Every day there will be things that appeal to every single person,” he said. “We have some things that kind of stepped over the line where people are gonna be like, ‘This is either really good or this is slowly killing me.’”

“But at least its antibiotic-free, hormone-free, free range,” added Coulter.

Rx The Farmacy’s menu is also open to interpretation. Scofield happily disclosed he’s more than willing to alter a dish upon a guest’s special request if he has the goods to do so.

“I say this because this is the most radical thing in the world but it pretty much let’s people know how serious I am about it: If you come in to eat here and you see on the menu French toast, a breakfast burrito, and shrimp & grits, if you want French toast and shrimp & grits mashed into a breakfast burrito, tell my server,” he said. “That’s gonna happen. That’s gonna go into your face.”

Rx The Farmacy will open Tuesday – Thursday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., Fri – Saturday from 8 a.m. – 10 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

UPDATE (6/12/2013): The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll has been postponed until July, 2013 due to heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast for this Thursday, according to an announcement on the University City District’s Facebook page posted this evening. We’ll post more information about the new date as soon as we have it.

The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll, the highly-anticipated annual event celebrating local businesses where most things are just a buck, is returning <del>this Thursday, June 13</del>. The stroll begins at 5:30 p.m. (it is always a good idea to get there early to avoid the crowds) and a record-setting 35 businesses will offer $1 deals along Baltimore Avenue, between 43rd and 50th Streets.

Besides the long-time participants, like Milk & Honey, Dock Street Brewery and Firehouse Bicycles, there will be some newcomers who recently opened shops in the area, including Little Baby’s Ice Cream and The Green Tambourine. This Dollar Stroll also showcases new parklets at Fu-Wah and Little Baby’s Ice Cream and the new pedestrian plaza at 48th and Baltimore.

In addition to storefront businesses, food trucks and vendors such as Jimmies Cupcake Co., Sunflower Truck Stop and Lil Dan’s will also be selling $1 items along the avenue. Also, don’t miss live music and entertainment: XPN favorite, The Fleeting Ends will perform live at 46th and Baltimore, along with fire artists and street performers such as the Give & Take Jugglers. There will be also giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

If you can’t make it this week there will be only one more stroll this year, on September 12.

Check out the flyer below for more details on what businesses are taking part in Thursday’s Stroll and what they are offering.
Lee’s Hoagie House, a Walnut Street institution on the west edge of Penn’s campus for 28 years, is closing for good tonight at 10 p.m.

Lee’s owner, Lois Zucker, is retiring and a new restaurant is moving into the space at 4034 Walnut, which is owned by Campus Apartments.

Lois has run the business on her own since her husband Jan died 14 years ago. “He was the heart and soul of this business,” she said.

Lee’s is a licensed chain that once had several independently owned shops. Lois and Jan opened the Walnut Street location in September, 1985. Its closing leaves only two Lee’s shops left in the city. The rest are in the suburbs.

A possibility remained that Lee’s would stay open under another owner. But Campus Apartments, which owns the Lee’s property and is one of West Philly’s biggest landlords, “wanted a change” for the storefront location, a valuable property on a block that has nearly exclusively student housing, Lois said. The potential buyer of the Lee’s license is scouting other locations in the neighborhood.

It remains unclear when the new restaurant, which will specialize in chicken dishes and “savory pies,” will open. There will be extensive renovation to the space.

The Zuckers built their shop around the area’s student presence and Lois said that students returned to the shop long after they graduated.

“The kids now come back with their own kids,” she said.

Lee’s also delivered subs via Fed Ex to Philadelphians or Penn students who had moved out of the region. She recalled sending two hoagies to a woman in Texas who was pregnant.

“She said all she wanted was tuna hoagies from Lee’s,” Lois said.

So there are just a few hours left to get a Lee’s hoagie in the neighborhood. Be sure to thank Lois. She’s the one in the green Lee’s t-shirt and ever-present white apron.

By the way, they don’t have any of their iconic t-shirts left to buy. We asked.

The Alexander Wilson School (46th and Woodland), which is one of two dozen public schools slated to close in a couple of weeks, is being eyed as a possible location for a charter school.

A public meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, June 13 beginning at 6 p.m. to discuss that possibility. Speakers will include Marc Mannella, CEO of KIPP: Philadelphia Schools and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell. The meeting will be held at the 46th Street Baptist Church, right across the street from Wilson at 46th and Woodland. All parents, students and members of the community are invited to attend.

While the fate of most of the closing schools is unclear, it is likely that some of them will become independently run charter schools. Some 57,000 of Philadelphia’s public school students were enrolled in charter schools this year, about 37 percent of all students.

Begun in 2003, KIPP: Philadelphia Schools currently operates one elementary school, KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy, two middle schools, KIPP Philadelphia Charter School and KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School, and one high school, KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy. The company hopes to operate 10 schools in West and North Philadelphia by 2016, according to its website. Those plans include adding one elementary school per year between 2013 and 2015.
