Family-friendly show in West Philly!!! Featuring one of the greatest clarinet players of Macedonia, Ismail Lumanovsky! Don’t miss it!

WPO is pleased to announce a very special show on September 30 at International House Philly, where we will share the stage with our good friends Inspector Gadje from Oakland, CA, and all-star Macedonian clarinetist Ismail Lumanovsky!

This extra-special event is a unique treat not to be missed. Inspector Gadje and Ismail are red-hot Balkan tornadoes and this is a rare chance to experience their fire and flair. For our part, WPO plans to play highlights from our new record, “Tour de Filli”, which incidentally will be released by Fly Bottle Records on Sept. 27 with a show at Franky Bradley’s.

Inspector Gadje Balkan Brass (San Francisco/Oakland)

With up to 14 musicians (12 horns and 2 percussionists), Bay Area-San Francisco-based Inspector Gadje brings a big sound to the beautiful and bumpin’ brass band music of the Balkans of south-eastern Europe. Hearing Inspector Gadje is love at first listen. The driving, tight groove of low brass and drums with soaring melodies from trumpets, saxophones, and clarinet incite joy and dance from the very first downbeat. Inspector Gadje ignites the dance floor and makes the party wherever they play, be it clubs (including notable venues such as the MGM Arena, Fox Theater, Palace Of Fine Arts, The Independent, Ashkenaz, Café du Nord, The New Parish, Rickshaw Stop, and Yoshi’s to name a few) weddings, parties, and street festivals.

Ismail Lumanovsky:

The extraordinary clarinetist Ismail Lumanovky has launched a major career as a soloist, chamber musician in both classical and cross-over repertoire. His synergistic blend of natural talent and training combines the spirit of folk music with the discipline of classical music. His performances have been widely reviewed. The New York Times wrote of his work under Pierre Boulez, “the soloist — the brilliant, fearless young clarinetist Ismail Lumanovsky — aligned himself with various instrumental contingents of the large ensemble”.

Born in Macedonia, Lumanovsky started playing the clarinet at age eight. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree and Master of Music Degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Professionally, Lumanovsky has had the privilege to perform with innumerable extraordinary musicians and orchestras including: Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, The Berklee Middle Eastern Fusion Ensemble, New Juilliard Ensemble, World Youth Symphony Orchestra, The Palestine Youth Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra, Marcel Khalife, Al Di Meola, Husnu Senlendirici, Selloane Nkhela, and Zulfu Livaneli. Lumanovsky is also a master improviser and performer of Macedonian, Turkish and Gypsy music and is presently touring with the renowned New York Gypsy All-Stars, playing throughout the US, Europe, and Asia and The Secret Trio.
