November 16-17, 2019

Opening Weekend will be a massive celebration, featuring energetic Aztec and West African dance performances, talks with the artists who installed their work in the Africa galleries, pop-up expert talks, hands-on activities for kids, themed café treats, and much more!

Be one of the first people to explore a series of completely reimagined spaces making their public debut on November 16, including the Penn Museum’s new Sphinx Gallery, Africa Galleries, Mexico and Central America Gallery, and its breathtaking Main Entrance, along with the historically restored 614-seat Harrison Auditorium.

Serving as the Penn Museum’s “unofficial mascot,” since its arrival in 1913, the 25,000-pound Sphinx of the Pharaoh Ramses II will make his much-anticipated return to the limelight—as the stunning centerpiece in the new Sphinx Gallery, right next to the new Main Entrance.

The reimagined 4,000 sq. ft. Africa Galleries showcase the extraordinarily diverse continent’s global influence, impact, and its role in the world today. Tracing the paths of specific objects—from their African makers to the Museum, the Africa Galleries offer first-person video narratives and contemporary art works to provide thought-provoking perspectives.

The 2,000 sq. ft. Mexico and Central America Gallery encourages visitors to explore the similarities among the region’s ancient cultures. Featuring contemporary videos, a listening bench to hear living languages that are the direct descendants of those spoken long ago, and a hieroglyph writing section, where guests can create-their-own names in Maya glyphs, the Mexico and Central America Gallery tells timeless, relatable stories, while highlighting the traditions of Maya people today.

Included with Museum admission. Free for Museum members, PennCard holders, U.S. active duty/reservist military personnel, and veterans.
