The Classical masters knew how to leverage small but powerful ensembles from the social hall to the solemnity and grandeur of the church. Night Music explores this secular-to-sacred connection in “The Boys of Summer.” A Midsummer’s eve is an ideal setting for breezy divertimenti of Mozart and the brothers Haydn: the famous Joseph and his talented (if less entrepreneurial) younger brother Michael. This is the original “night music”: think of a moonlit garden soirée. Oboist Geoffrey Burgess stars in Mozart’s more serious and virtuosic oboe quartet, K.370. Connecting sacred with secular, the University Lutheran Choir (Matthew Glandorf, director) joins Night Music for Mozart’s beloved and sultry masterpiece for the solemn summer Feast of Corpus Christi, Ave Verum Corpus and his festive Te Deum.
