You can take unwanted pills – drugs and possibly vitamins and turn them in at this event run by Pharmacy Students. If you miss it you can take them to the Police Station at 55th and Pine where there is a collection box (open 24/7).
Generally it is not best to throw them in the trash or flush them down the toilet or leave them around in your house.
