What is West?: Free Community Photography Workshops!

Free Photography and Archival Workshops at Malcolm X Park! – All Ages (March-August)

What is West? a socially engaged creative project that centers the voices of Philadelphia-born individuals. It encourages participants of all ages to document and further archive West & Southwest Philadelphia’s vibrant history and community. Participants will have hands-on experience learning these creative skills through photography and other visual art practices. We will have field trips, site visits, and guest workshops to support building a culminating outdoor exhibit at Malcolm X Park. These workshops are free and are for all ages/levels of photography experience!

Our first workshop is: Wednesday, March 20th 4-6pm & Saturday, March 23rd 1-3 pm

The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage and The Arts League sponsor this project.

Holy Week & Easter at Calvary

Calvary Church kicks off Holy Week with hybrid worship on Palm & Passion Sunday, March 24, 11:15 am. The service features a justice-oriented Stations of the Cross & Crucifixion Ongoing.

Holy Week activities also include a hybrid Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Vespers (with Communion) and Good Friday Interfaith Walk & Witness to End Gun Violence (at Simpson-Fletcher United Methodist Church in Overbrook / co-sponsored by Calvary).

Easter Sunday begins at 8 am with a simple “sunrise” service at Cedar Park (at Calvary in case of inclement weather), and continues with a potluck brunch, Easter egg hunt and full worship experience celebrating liberation and new life (11 am – PLEASE NOTE new and earlier start time).

Spring Break Camp for Grades K-5

Our action-packed camp is taught by theatre professionals. Campers will spend the week taking acting, improv, music, dance, and playwriting classes while working as a team to create an original show! Family and friends are invited to a performance in the Arden’s Studio Theatre on the last day of camp.

Come join us for a night of soulful music as we pay tribute to the legendary Erykah Badu. This event will take place on Fri March 29th at 8:00 PM. Doors open at 7 pm.

The tribute will be led by Jahwula Seapoe, a talented R&B/Neo-Soul vocalist, and her musical friends Tylar J, and Kito Starr. Together, they will perform a 1-hour set of some of Erykah Badu’s greatest hits that have left an indelible mark on the world of music. You can expect to groove to some of her classics, such as “Didn’t Cha Know” and “Bag Lady” throughout the night.

Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience. Grab your friends and get ready to be inspired by the one and only Erykah Badu.

Meet the Artists:

Jahwula Seapoe is an R&B/Neo-Soul vocalist and storyteller who performs captivating renditions of popular songs from the 70s to the present day. She is from West Philadelphia and has studied under various influential musicians in her community and at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. Some of her mentors include Lisa Willson DeNolfo, Sherry Wilson Butler, and Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Kate McGarry.

The 4th Annual Spring Clothing Swap for Babies and Kids will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 10AM-noon on the 4200 Block of Regent Square (across from the playgrounds at Clark Park). Drop-offs will begin at 9:30AM.

Rooted in the principles of futures thinking and speculative design, Futures Without Guns invites visitors to embark on a journey through diverse artistic perspectives and tap into their innate creativity to envision a future where the threat of gun violence is a distant memory. Futures Without Guns is a call to action that unites us in our collective determination to actively shape a brighter future.

Maimouna Youssef, also known as Mumu Fresh, is the critically acclaimed Afro-Indigenous singer, Emcee, songwriter, activist, workshop facilitator and audio engineer who’s been called a “quadruple threat” by The Roots’ Black Thought and “groundbreaking” by Oscar-winning artist, Common. With her expansive musical background ranging from Jazz, Gospel, Spirituals, traditional African & traditional Indigenous music, to Hip Hop (also celebrating 50 years!), Soul, rock and experimental acapella fusion, this concert is a multi-genre live music event not to miss. Plus, Maimouna is 23/24 artist-in-residence for Anthems for the Anthropocene, the climate change songwriting context presented by Drexel Climate & Sustainability.

BalletX returns to TD Pavilion at the Mann for two extraordinary nights of dance and live music! Experience world premiere choreography by Natasha Adorlee with live music by Jac Ross, the Philadelphia premiere of Takehiro Ueyama’s Heroes (2019) with live music by Kato Hideki, and the return of Jamar Roberts’ Eros & Psyche (2023), featuring a Philip Glass score performed live by ensemble132.
