The Friends of Malcolm X Park, a community organization that advocates for this historic West Philly park and organizes events and activities, is seeking volunteers who can dedicate some of their spare time to the park. It can be just a few hours or a more significant commitment – any help will be appreciated. Neighbors who are seeking to be more active in the community and interested in volunteering with the group are asked to fill out an online engagement survey.

Established in 1993, Friends of Malcolm X Park has been involved in many community events, such as the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival, Thursday Night Jazz in the Park, Love Your Park Day and other park cleanups, and more.

Do you like to visit Clark Park and want to provide feedback? Friends of Clark Park (FoCP), a volunteer-run group behind the maintenance and improvements at the park, has released their annual survey on the state of the park.

It is a short survey that takes no more than 5 minutes to complete, but it is really important for FoCP to get feedback and set direction for the park each year. For example, the community feedback received last year was instrumental in advocating for the bathrooms (“Portland Loo“) which are being installed later this year.

The following is a guest submission from Alice Wells, a member of Friends of Clark Park, about the master plan for Clark Park.

The park we know today is the result of a series of master plans executed by the Friends of Clark Park over the past 45 years. When I first moved across from the park, in 1979, plans focused on tree and grass planting, trash pickup, lighting, a never-agreed-upon enclosed dog park, and working with the City to spread permits for large and loud events to alternating sides of the park, to preserve grass and the good will of neighbors.

Then 25 years ago, beginning with numerous community meetings, and with organizing and fundraising support from University City District and surrounding schools, a Master Plan for ambitious physical changes to the park was developed. There would be brand new play areas in B Park and resurfacing of the basketball court. Park A’s then cracked and mud-covered, sinking walkways would be rerouted, also diseased trees would be removed and a gravel circle with tables and chairs created in Park A (along Baltimore Ave), which was closed for the year it took to complete the renovations. Friends of Clark Park, a volunteer-run organization, is working on a new master plan for the popular West Philly park, known for its farmers and flea markets, outdoor theater productions and film screenings, music festivals, sports and recreation programs, and many other community events. The plan, which is expected to be completed next year, “will set the vision for future park development and investment plans,” according to Ari Kessler, Friends of Clark Park Communications Committee Chair and Board Director.

Studio Bryan Hanes, a Philadelphia landscape architecture firm, has been selected by the Friends as a partner in the planning process. As part of this process, the partners are looking for community input. The City’s Department of Streets has opened registration for residents and groups who want to participate in this year’s Spring Cleanup, the annual citywide cleaning, beautification and greening program.

This year, the event will be held on Saturday, April 2. Individuals and organizations are invited to submit their projects, such as park and neighborhood cleanups, or register as volunteers.

The Spring Cleanup activities include trash pick-up, sweeping sidewalks, removing graffiti, painting benches, planting bulbs and more.

Project registration deadline is Friday, March 18. Volunteers registration closes on Friday, April 1.

The program launched in 2008 and since then a total of 200,000 volunteers have removed more than 11 million pounds of trash.

Over 65 parks across Philadelphia will host volunteer clean-up events on Saturday, Nov. 14 as part of the bi-annual “Love Your Park” Service Day.

Residents are encouraged to join local Park Friends groups and help them clean up parks after a busy summer season, collect leaves for compost, plant trees and flower bulbs, and more.

Clean up events are being organized at many West Philly and Southwest Philly parks as well, including Clark Park (43rd and Baltimore), Cedar Park (49th and Baltimore), Malcolm X. Park (51st and Pine), Barkan Park (50th and Spruce), Carroll Park (58th and Girard), Cobbs Creek Park (Cobbs Creek Pkwy and Whitby), Bartram’s Garden (54th and Lindbergh) and more.  Continue Reading
