Altercation leads to shooting near 52nd and Spruce

A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and wounded overnight near 52nd and Spruce. Police were patrolling the area at around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday when they heard 8-10 gunshots coming from 52nd and Spruce. When they approached the intersection they saw a male with a handgun, according to a police report. The police ordered the man to drop the gun, but he fled east on Spruce approximately 20 feet and threw the gun under a parked car.

The police stopped the man and he stated that he was involved in an altercation with two other males and was shot. He also said that the gun was taken from one of the other males during the altercation. While handcuffing the man they observed two males wearing dark clothing running east on Spruce. The man was bleeding from the right side of his chest and was transported to Presbyterian Hospital. His condition is unknown. Police say he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police also retrieved surveillance video of the incident showing the victim and two males in the street having what appeared to be a conversation, which “turned into a running gun battle,” according to the report. The investigation continues.

35-year-old man fatally shot at 47th and Kingsessing (updated)

UPDATE (12/17/2015): Police have identified the victim as 35-year-old Mark Marshall from the 4500 block of Kingsessing. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the man was returning home from a shopping trip to a nearby store and was walking on the 4600 block of Kingsessing with his two dogs when he was approached by an unknown male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and orange hat and shot multiple times. The assailant then got into the passenger seat of a silver minivan and fled.

Witnesses told police that there was an argument between the two men before the shooting. It’s not clear whether the two men knew each other.

Many people heard the gunshots and some took to social media to express their sadness for the victim and his family and friends:

 

(12/16/2015, 9 p.m.): A fatal shooting was reported on Wednesday evening at around 7:45 p.m. near 47th and Kingsessing. A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times, according to police. They’re searching for a silver Town & Country minivan that fled the scene. The victim was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 8:05 p.m.

Man wanted for murder inside Mantua grocery store arrested in Florida

U.S. Marshals have arrested a man wanted for the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Maurice McDonald inside a Mantua convenience store last month.

Kayree Reid, 28, was tracked down and arrested in Orange Park, Florida on Tuesday evening after a car chase, according to a report by CBS Philly.

Reid had been at large since the November 10 shooting, which happened inside J and R Perez Grocery at 38th and Aspen shortly before 8:30 a.m. McDonald was shot multiple times and died at the hospital the same day.

McDonald’s mother Tiffany Phelps spoke to ABC Action News in November and said that her son had just enrolled in community college and “was rebuilding his life” when he was targeted and shot inside the store.

68-year-old man shot and critically wounded at his residence on 5100 block of Cedar

We just received information on this from police: A 68-year-old man was shot and critically wounded inside his residence on the 5100 block of Cedar Avenue on the morning of Dec. 2. The shooting was reported by a concerned neighbor who lives on the same block as the victim.

Police say that the man was in his row home on the morning of December 2 when someone knocked on the front door. The victim opened the inner door and began having a conversation with an unknown male who was on the other side of the security door. The victim was unable to open the security door because it was locked and his girlfriend had the key, according to police. Then the man fired two gunshots from outside through the security door. Two, including teenage girl, assault, rob man near 45th and Larchwood (updated)

Police are looking for a 17-year-old girl and another person who they say robbed a man near 45th and Larchwood on Sunday evening. Police identified the girl after she dropped her unlocked cell phone, which included her picture as the wallpaper, during a foot chase.

Police say the young woman and an unidentified person robbed the 25-year-old man while he was walking home at about 7:45 p.m. The man told police that a person approached him and hit him in the head with an unknown object, while someone else held his arms back. The suspects took the man’s iPhone and his backpack, containing a laptop among other things, and fled westbound on Larchwood Avenue.

Five minutes later a police officer spotted two people running east on the 4700 block of Cedar Avenue who fit the description of the robbers and started pursuing them on foot, but lost them in an alley, according to a police report.  Continue Reading

Driver charged after car passes stopped trolley, kills woman crossing street at 54th and Woodland

Murder and DUI charges were filed on Tuesday against the driver who struck and killed a woman as she crossed the street at 54th and Woodland on Monday morning. Police say 23-year-old Malachi Armstrong was driving eastbound on Woodland Avenue at about 9:15 a.m. when he allegedly sped through a red light and attempted to pass a stopped Route 11 Trolley.

While he was passing the trolley on the left he struck and killed the woman, identified as 38-year-old mother of three Miriam Wilson, who was crossing the street (it was reported initially that she was attempting to catch the trolley). She was pronounced dead on the scene.

After striking the woman Armstrong lost control of his car, a 2015 Nissan Altima, crossed over into oncoming traffic, collided head-on with another vehicle and then hit a pole, according to reports. The driver of the vehicle that Armstrong struck head-on was hospitalized with injuries to his legs.

Armstrong was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI, according to court documents. At his arraignment, bail was denied.
