SEPTA trolley tunnel to close for maintenance Friday, Aug. 9; Woodlands to stay open

August 8, 2019

The annual SEPTA trolley tunnel maintenance project, the “Trolley Tunnel Blitz,” is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9 and will continue until Monday, Aug. 19 at 5 a.m., SEPTA has announced. For the duration of the project, which will include trolley track replacement, station upgrades, painting and cleaning, and other maintenance work, Trolley Routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 will not operate in the tunnel.

During the Trolley Tunnel Blitz, all trolleys will divert to 40th and Market Streets where passengers can transfer to the Market-Frankford line at no additional cost for service to/from Center City.

SEPTA began the Trolley Tunnel Blitz projects in 2014. On average, 700 vehicles operate through the five-mile Trolley Tunnel every day, and the work is scheduled during the late summer when ridership is usually lower.

More information on the work scheduled during the 2019 SEPTA Trolley Tunnel Blitz is available here.

The Woodlands Cemetery and Mansion at 40th and Woodland will stay open during the tunnel blitz. Despite the blitz, visitors will be able to walk, bike, and drive into the Woodlands. Check out their upcoming event on Sunday, Aug. 11 at 4:00 p.m.: a musical performance by the EVER Ensemble. Tickets are on a sliding scale from $5-$50. For more information, go here.
