Road closures, detours, cheer zones for 2017 Philadelphia Marathon

The 2017 Philadelphia Marathon will take place on Sunday, Nov. 19, and the half-marathon on Saturday, Nov. 18. Here’s some important information on road closures, bus detours, and cheer zones.

Marathon Races, Activities, Cheer Zones

Here you can find information on the marathon and here on the half-marathon. Other activities include the  Rothman 8K Run and Kids Fun Run on Saturday. And if you want to cheer on the runners, here’s information on the cheer zones. 

Half-Marathon Course Map

Here are the cheer zones in West Philadelphia/University City for the Half-Marathon on Saturday:

• 33rd & Market Streets – (Drexel Armory) Mile 7.8 (7:40 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.)
• 34th Street & Fairmount Avenue — Mile 9 (7:45 a.m.-10:15 a.m.)
• 34th Streets & Girard Avenue @ the Philadelphia Zoo — Mile 10.1 (7:45 a.m.-10:30 a.m.)

Cheer zones in West Philly/University City for Sunday, Nov. 19:

• Chestnut Square @ 32nd and Chestnut Streets — Mile 7 (7:10 a.m. -9:19 a.m.)
• 34th & Chestnut Streets @ Domus — Mile 7.5 (7:10 a.m.-9:15 a.m.)
• 34th Street & Fairmount Avenue — Mile 8 (7:15 a.m.-9:30 a.m.)
• 34th Streets & Girard Avenue @ the Philadelphia Zoo — Mile 8.3 (7:15 a.m.-9:30 a.m.)
• Please Touch Museum (West Memorial Drive & Avenue of the Republic) — Mile 10 (7:15 a.m.-9:45 a.m.)
• States Drive and Belmont – Mile 10.8 (7: 18 a.m. – 9:55 a.m.)
• Martin Luther King Drive & Black Road – Mile 11.9 (7:20 a.m. -10:00 a.m.)

Road Closures

Streets will be closed in many parts of the city on Nov. 18-19. Delays should be expected. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes, avoid areas along the race course, allow for extra driving time and proceed with caution during Race Weekend.

The following streets will be affected across the city on Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.:

• 18th Street, from Arch to Callowhill Streets
• 19th Street, from Arch to Callowhill Streets
• 20th Street, from Arch to Callowhill Streets
• 21st Street, from Spring Garden to Arch Streets
• 22nd Street, from Spring Garden to Arch Streets
• Benjamin Franklin Parkway, from 16th to 22nd Streets
• Arch Street, from 6th to 16th Street
• 6th Street, from Market to Chestnut Streets
• 5th Street from Chestnut to Race
• South Penn Square
• Juniper from Chestnut to Market
• John F. Kennedy Blvd., from Juniper to 17th Streets
• 15th Street, from Race to Chestnut Streets
• 16th Street, from Chestnut to Race Streets
• Race Street, from 6th Street to Columbus Boulevard
• Columbus Boulevard (Southbound lanes), from Vine Street to Washington Avenue
• Southbound off-ramp, from I-95 at Washington Avenue

On Sunday, the City will implement “no-parking” regulations on all vehicles on the race route.

Public Transportation, Detours

SEPTA is alerting customers to a number of bus detours that will be in place this Saturday and Sunday due to road closures for the 2017 Philadelphia Marathon.

Saturday, Nov. 18: Philadelphia Half-Marathon, Rothman 8K and Kids Run

Routes 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 31, 32, 33, 38, 40, 42, 47, 47M, 48, 57, 61, 64, 124 and 125 will be detoured beginning at 6 a.m. Buses will return to their regular routes as close to the end of the events as possible.

Sunday, Nov. 19: Philadelphia Marathon

Routes 7, 32, 33, 38, 43 and 48 will be placed on detour beginning at 2 a.m. to accommodate course set-up and the marathon. Routes K, R, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 38, 40, 42, 43, 47, 47M, 48, 57, 61, 64, 65, 124 and 125 will begin detours at 6 a.m. through the conclusion of the race events on Sunday afternoon. Buses will return to their regular routes as close to the end of the events as possible.

Route 15 Trolley

The Route 15 Trolley will also be detoured and will operate as two different bus routes on both November 18 and 19 (beginning at 6 a.m.), one for West Philadelphia and one for North Philadelphia/Fishtown. There will be no service between 40th and 29th Streets. Customers who need to use both routes can connect via the Market-Frankford Line (Girard and 40th Streets).
