Community Potluck Dinner at Greensgrow West

November 17, 2016

Greensgrow 1In light of last week’s presidential election that left many people in Philadelphia frustrated and upset, Greensgrow West (5123 Baltimore Ave) is organizing a community potluck dinner this Friday (Nov. 18) to provide a space for people to be together. All are invited and are welcome to bring a dish to share and/or nonperishable food to donate to PEC’s Rowan House, transitional housing for women and children.

If you want to bring a donation, PEC is currently collecting sides for Thanksgiving dinner, like corn and cranberries, and canned protein, like tuna.

Greensgrow will also have space to write cards to local minority-owned businesses and a small fire pit in which to write down feelings and throw them in.

The dinner will take place from 6 – 8 p.m, and you can RSVP on the event’s Facebook page.

Is this for real, a fire pit for feelings? Hey, I’m all for community potlucks and support the work of PEC. But really, have we come to this? A fire pit for feelings? Protest, march in the street, hold elected politicians accountable, including Trump. You will still have your feelings after the fire pit and he will still be president-elect. The nation will survive and maybe even thrive.

  2. Ali Says:

WP, no one suggested that the fire pit is their only outlet for expression. The same people attending this dinner may have been protesting, marching, and calling politicians all week. Luckily, they don’t need your approval to address their feelings however they choose.

  3. WP Says:

@Ali You sound a little snarky. If I hurt your feelings I apologize. Write it down and throw it in the fire pit. Seriously now, and yes I’m having a little fun with this. No one needs my approval and I would never suggest that. But I should be able to express my feelings as well and without a fire pit. I get it. People are angry or frustrated or worried or ….. Perhaps I’ve been around long enough and have seen enough that whether Hillary or Trump we will be okay. Hillary was probably not the answer many were looking for and I for one am not unhappy that she and her husband will not be back in the White House. Obama had 8 years and look were we are. A nation divided. People outside the urban elite centers of America want real change. Maybe we will get it. Maybe not. Trump won. He’s our president. Like it or not. He may not be the ogre many expect. He may be worse. Whatever. Enjoy life today. Tomorrow has its own worries.

OMG! Our neighborhood blog has been infiltrated by ‘the deplorables’!!!!

I get the feeling, WP, that you’re happy with trumpence. Most of us aren’t, not with them or the names being brought up for cabinet positions, not with all 3 executive branches being in power. There’s threats to far too many of us. So yes, we are protesting – peacefully in any way we can. Writing feelings or intentions, then burning them to send them out to the universe is a long-held tradition in many cultures. Not yours, obviously. But I think it’s a wonderful idea. Along with the dinner and the food drive.

@Strongforu I think you’re being facetious but in reality the “basket of deplorables” represents millions of Americans, people who love their country, believe in 2nd amendment rights, shop at Wal-Mart, don’t live in urban areas, and reject social engineering and the rejection of traditional values. The deplorables rose up against government intrusion and intolerance of those who tolerate almost everything except those who hold traditional values – pro-life, pro-family, pro-religion – and decided that a candidate (Hillary), who stated the religious beliefs have to be changed in order to advance a liberal agenda, was not fit to become president. It seems the Democrats underestimated the deplorables and decided that deplorable was better than despicable.

@qwn “Happy” would not describe how I feel about Trump/Pence although I think Pence has a decency that Trump lacks. It’s not about my happiness. I did not vote for Obama in 2008 or 2012 but he was my president and elected by our nation. I respected him in his office and disagreed with many of his policies. I didn’t protest or whine. My happiness does not depend on who is president but on who I am. I understand that we live in a pluralistic society and I don’t always get my way. I love my neighbors, democrat or republican, black or white, gay or straight, etc. I hold sincerely to beliefs that others may not hold to. We can disagree without demeaning and diminishing each other. I welcome all people and their views. I do not have to affirm what they believe. But I still must love them and treat them with dignity.

WP, way to be that person who writes a bunch of back handed insulting opinions that nobody asked for on a local forum then immediately gets defensive and comes back with long-winded opinions about society, neighbors, etc that again nobody asked for. Can’t wait to see what comes next! Great stuff! Should I hold onto that feeling by the bonfire?

  9. Delcolaxing Says:

Hey WP, look there’s an article today about a new pizza parlor. Why don’t you christen it with a well timed comment about the liberal agenda.

  10. WP Says:

@Delcolaxing. Funny. You seem to be a person who offered a backhanded insult that no one asked for on a local forum because you got defensive and came back with lame responses that don’t engage thought. About the pizza, I’m all for it and long as they don’t throw written down feelings into the pizza oven, unless their yours.

This site seems to have a mind of it’s own when it comes to posts being uploaded successfully.

Rather than reconstruct my entire post let it suffice to say that while I may have differences with WP, Democrats have no reason to complain. By allowing a corrupt racist war criminal to steal the nomination they got what they deserved; unfortunately it affects us all.

If in four years the remains of the Democratic Party don’t purge the Clinton/Schumer/Booker wing and recognize Sanders as the party’s rightful leader (if he still wants the job) they’ll blow it again.

I would add that as a progressive socialist, and certainly not a Trump person, I have no issues with people taking to the streets when necessary. But I would never join an anti-Trump demonstration with a theme of “Hillary really won!” or support an effort to manipulate the Electoral College in her favor.

I would add that as a progressive socialist, and certainly not a Trump person, I have no issues with people taking to the streets when they see fit. However I would never join a demonstration which supported a lame position such as “Hillary really won,” or endorse manipulating the electoral college in her favor. And I consider it hypocritical that people were ready to jump into action on Nov. 9 to denounce Trump’s racism, xenophobia, etc., when I doubt they would have done to same had Clinton prevailed. After all, it wasn’t Trump who put a generation of Black youth in prison or laughed gleefully at the brutal torture-murder of Khadafy after destroying his country.
