West Philly Square Dance reborn; “Last Friday” Dance tonight

April 29, 2016

SquareDance

Do you like Square Dance and want to have some fun tonight? Then read on. The newly-reborn West Philly Square Dance (Facebook page) has been going strong for a few months, according to organizers, and tonight all are invited to St. Mary’s Church on Locust Walk (near 40th and Locust) for the “Last Friday” Dance.

People of all ages are welcome and no experience is needed as all dances will be taught. Admission is $5-$10 sliding scale. Also, please bring a vessel/bottle/cup etc. to use for water because square dancing is exercise!

And here’s some important information from the organizers:

People of all genders are invited and welcome to join us at the West Philly Square Dance. But please come with the knowledge that many of the traditional dances called use gendered language. We understand that this may create an environment that feels unsafe. We know about this and we are working on it. We are doing our best to a) find callers who are are excited about breaking down gender binaries and will call dances accordingly, b) work towards creating and using new language for traditional dances that uses terms that are not gender specific. As a new community this space is a work in progress and as we work towards a truly queer trans and gender non binary friendly space, we promise to start by always inviting all folks to dance in whichever roles they want.”

The dance kicks off at 8 p.m. sharp. Check out the event’s Facebook page for more info.
