Evan Sweitzer, a 10-year-old boy who’s been helping a local cat rescue, is a celebrity after Reddit shared a story about him and The Huffington Post picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Now Evan will appear on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that will air today at 3 p.m. on NBC (you can watch the segment here).

Since 2009 Evan has been sending letters and his allowance money to City Kitties, a West Philly-based cat rescue organization. His family adopted a cat, Macha, from City Kitties and Evan wanted to help other cats. For 2012, Evan donated $110, which his parents matched for a total of $220.

Here’s Evan’s letter that City Kitties received along with his latest donation.

And I thought Evan was the coolest kid ever when he showed up at my door as the Phillies Organist for Halloween (although I didn’t know it was him until Ellen’s segment). What a wonderful, wonderful young man…I can’t wait for the figs either!

Yes, I love your cursive Evan! You’re a true Fresh Prince for the neighborhood.

I saw Evan today on Ellen and I just wanted to reach in and give him a hug! What a beautiful kid. I take care of a little girl with special needs and we watch Ellen everyday. She loved Evan too, she was squealing with delight and knocking on the TV (she does that when she likes whoever is on it) during his interview.

Dear Ellen, I enjoyed watching the show about Evan and his work for the cat shelter. In our neck of the woods (truly, South Paris and Norway Maine), local schoolchildren have been trying their best to raise funds for Responsible Pet Care, a no-kill animal shelter which is overloaded with felines and that had to start caring for dogs as well when the animal control officer had to close his facilities. Their current building is falling down and overcrowded and would take $100,000 to repair, sp they have put a bid on another building big enough to give the dogs room to go outside and more room for the cats. The sale price is $350,000 and even in this rural and poor area of Maine, they have managed to raise $175,000 so far with a March 1st deadline. We’re trying so hard, but could use a helping hand. Perhaps Petco might be willing to help with even a donation of food. On today’s sho (1/25 – Happy Birthday –
there was an offer to enter the website for $250 gift card from Petco – that would help a great deal. The person to contact is Lucille at Responsible Pet Care 207-743-8679 or the Waterford Rd (Rte 118), Norway, Me 04268. My contact information is Bonnie Cohen, Bryant Pond,Me 04219 207-665-2237. I’m just a lowly helper trying to raise funds wherever available (being elderly and disabled, I can send only $10 every 2 or 3 months so any help would be greatly appreciated). You’re such a blessing and your show such an inspiration. I hope your staff will notify you of this most important and desperate request. Thank you for being you. Love, Bonnie.
