Police foil gunpoint robbery

July 29, 2012

Two West Philadelphia residents were mugged last night, around 11:15 p.m. on Kingsessing between 46th and 47th Streets, according to police. Two men, one with a gun, told the victims to sit down on the ground and empty their pockets. One of the victims was hit in the face with the gun and later taken to the hospital with minor facial injuries. While the robbery was in progress, undercover police officers turned up and arrested one of the robbers on the spot, then later, after a chase, they caught the other suspect near 46th and Linmore.

The victims’ belongings were recovered, with the exception of a wallet. We are trying to get more information from the police whether this incident is related to other robberies in the area, including a very recent one when a man was robbed and pistol-whipped at 46th and Cedar Avenue.

If you are out late and alone – or nearly alone – please exercise caution. We definitely need a defensive action class given by Town Watch or the Police to the community. It makes a difference.

+1 to Joe Clarke’s point: “We definitely need a defensive action class given by Town Watch or the Police to the community.”

48th St. Neighbors crime and safety group is looking into providing a self-defense class in the fall for the neighborhood, given by Iris Bloom. She gave tips at our first meeting, that people have found very useful. She has agreed to teaching a class for the community in October. Stay tuned!

@Patti Bulack and @Joe Clarke: a self defense class would be really great. My housemate just tonight was followed while out walking her dog and happened to run into a security officer who accompanied her home. She was walking around the neighborhood of 46-48 around Kingsessing/Chester/Woodland etc. around 530. We would really welcome an opportunity to learn skills that would make us feel a little safer. Additional police surveillance in the area wouldn’t hurt either!!
